Nikki Haley wins big in the GOP governor race in SC

(CNN) - The Republican Governors Association wasted no time Tuesday evening congratulating rising GOP star Nikki Haley in her bid to become South Carolina’s first female governor.

The state lawmaker’s victory over Rep. Gresham Barrett in the GOP runoff “is a testament to her hard work, perseverance and determination,” RGA Executive Director Nick Ayers said in a statement. “Her success ushers in a new era of South Carolina politics, and represents a growing new generation of Republican leaders from across the country. We congratulate her on besting an experienced field of challengers, first capturing the most votes in the primary and then winning the short runoff.”

“We look forward to working with Nikki Haley and her campaign to ensure that she earns a tremendous and well-deserved victory in November,” Ayers added.

In effort to ground Haley’s rising star, Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association, slammed the South Carolina Republican and her party.

“National Republicans desperate for a new rising star are prematurely attaching their hopes to Nikki Haley, who has moved so far outside the mainstream that she’s damaged her general election hopes,” Daschle said in a statement.

CNN projects that Haley has beaten Barrett in the GOP runoff. According to vote totals provided by the Associated Press, with 65 percent of precincts reporting, Haley had 158,539 votes or 64.4 percent of the votes reported compared to Barrett's 87,630 votes or 35.6 percent.

She's not going to go "hiking in the appalachians?"

I'm not from there, I don't have much of an opinion.

I'm not from SC, either, but I think the standard that the Republican Party is only for white, mostly male racists is over. And that makes me happy.

One can hope. Depends on if her party-mates continue to question her religion and call her a raghead i suppose.

Dixiecrats were members of the State's Rights Democratic Party, formed by people who left the Democratic Party (or at the least were trying to be an alternative Democratic Party) in 1948 because of Truman's formation of the Committee on Civil Rights and the Democratic Party's inclusion of a civil rights plank in their platform. Strom Thurmond became the Dixiecrat nominee for president. The party fell apart after the 1948 election, with its members for the most part returning to the Democratic Party, although many (like Thurmond) eventually became Republicans.

Not denying at all that there has been racism in the Democratic Party, but the Dixicrats may not be the best example.

BTW, how's the quitting going?

What MC said. Also, there are shifts over the past 60 years. IF that's how far back you go to make your point, you're not doing well.

LOL. I think (hope) PIKA2001's trying to be tongue-in-cheek.

Perceptions of these political parties exist for a reason. It doesn't mean that everyone who identify with these political parties are a certain way. The Dixiecrats, although they left the Democratic party, are an indication that these political labels are not representative of the viewpoints of those who identify as "Democrat" or "Republican."

Democrats and Republicans all suck.

I WAS The Dem and Republican Party are two sides of the same coin, so I find it funny when Democrats label the Repubs as the party of racism, as if their own party is without racism. Maybe I look at things differently since I'm not aligned with any party, but It's annoying as shit to watch politics when they sink down to the name calling level, especially since NO party is pure or without blood/dirt on their hand.

I think it's a little early to start short-listing the 2012 VP noms...she hasn't even made it through November yet.

EEEGGGGGGZACTLY!

@AF....I don't think we got that far into the thread yet...with the debacle that was Charles Stanford, I think the main point of this is to see if a young woman of Indian descent can win in the South...like Bobby Jindal

I guess this wasn't mentioned in the article you posted, but I read one earlier this morning that said she would be in contention for VP in 2012.
