loveandAOE's fall '08 recruitment story

Ok, this is going to come to no surprise to anyone [judging from my signiture] that I am an Alpha Phi and loving it! I've wanted to post my story for a while and have never gotten around to it. I'm going to be honest so I hope you guys like it and have fun guessing which one is Alpha Phi!

I'm going to try to keep this short and sweet because I know it get's annoying waiting for updates.

The way recruitment at my school runs is that day 1 takes place at the student involvement center on campus and each sorority gets thier own room. Day 2 takes place at the student involvement center and is about philanthropy--after this day we rank and the sororities can cut. Day 3 is house tours and after today it gets narrowed down to 2. Day 4 is preference. There are 5 npc sororities at my school:

-Bellini
-Martini
-Lemon Drop
-Bahama Mama
-Margarita

Part 1

So I've always been really shy growing up so it's not surprising that I was beyond nervous for recruitment. I didn't know much about the Greek System. I knew the system at our school was not super competitive, but competitive enough. I remember the website said day 1 dress was casual so i just wore jeans, a tee shirt, and converse and when I arrived there I just felt way to casual...kinda funny to think back on it now! I'll put these in order of the ones I attended:

-Lemon Drop: These girls, not gonna lie, seemed a little fake to me, but it was probably nerves [I know that now from being on the other side]. This sorority had the most amount of people in the room and I could see why: a lot of the girls were really pretty. I had fun talking to the girls and looking at the pictures, I really liked how diverse the house was--they had a ton of different girls with different interests. I remember leaving that room and thinking that I was probably so boring to talk to because I was so quiet.

-Margarita: I was feeling a little more comfortable now that I was getting used to the process. The Margarita's seemed like the athletic house. I talked for a long time with them and I seemed to get along with them, but I was having one problem: all of them were wearing sweater sets and pears necklaces...not really my style. I was afraid I would not fit into this house but I wanted to go in with an open mind and not judge but that can be really hard sometimes.

-Martini: This house was by far the smallest house. They had some really sweet girls but all in all a little forgettable. The girls were just so uninteresting, but I tried to keep an open mind because they seemed like sweet girls. I had some good conversations but all in all I wasn't impressed.

-Bellini: This house was one I was really excited about because I had heard so much about how cool they were [I know this is bad...but sometimes it's hard not to listen to tent talk] and how the guys all thought they were fun to hang out with. One of my friends really liked this house to. They seemed really nice and the best part is they really seemed to be interested in me! They ignored other girls that were going through rush just to talk to me!

-Bahama Mama: This house by far was the most intimidating. I remember being really intimidated because the girls that I talked to were all so pretty. A lot of them were also really involved on campus, which was a plus. The only bad thing was I had heard that this house was the party girl house which I wasn't really into but I decide to try to be really friendly. They seemed nice enough, but I still really wanted Bellini so I probably wasn't as talkative as I should have been.

I ranked it in my head:
-Bellini
-Lemon Drop
-Bahama Mama
-Margarita
-Martini

Who do you think is Alpha Phi?

Day 2: Philanthropy

This day I actually put a little more effort into my appearence. It was after a long day of classes and I was really tired. This day was optional but I decided to go. Each house had a craft but I won't bore you with those details because it's not really that important and I don't remember all of them to be honest. I met 2 girls walking to the student involvement center, one of them wanted to rush Margarita and the other Bellini. It was nice to make some friends because non of my friends were rushing.

-Lemon Drop: This was the first house I saw. I was really excited because I liked them the day before. Unfortunately, these girls barely talked to me. It was awkward because I had to ask all the questions about them and they didn't ask any about me...but seemed to have no problem making conversation with my new friend [the one who wanted to be a Margarita]. I felt really embarrassed and dissappointed...was I really that uninteresting? Needless to say I didn't stay very long at this house.

-Martini: This house was actually pretty friendly to me...I still wasn't really feeling them but it was a nice change after my bad expierence with Lemon Drop. I actually stayed at this house a fairly long time.

-Margarita: This house was really fun. All the girls were super friendly to me and asked me lots of questions about myself. I chatted with thier recruitment chair who said I would be an excellent addition to the house [which I know from going through as a rusher is something you should never say!] which made me feel really special.

-Bellini: This house was one I was really excited for. A lot of girls who I met the day before remembered me which was really cool. They all seemed so genuine and I felt that the conversation flowed really easily. I was really comfortable talking to them.

-Bahama Mama: This house was another good expierence. A lot of girls I met the day before seemed really excited to see me and we actually go to joking around. I felt really comfortable and excited to be at this house. I met one girl in particular that I had a good conversation with, we had a lot in common.

I had to rank at the end of today and i was completely torn between Bellini and Bahama Mama!

I decided to rank [on first instincts]:
-Bahama Mama
-Bellini
-Margarita
-Martini
-Lemon Drop [because I felt I had no hope anyway....]

Day 3: House Tours

This was the day I was most looking forward to! When I arrived to the designated spot, all of us pnm's were split into rush groups and given a rho gamma. I really liked my group [well, most of them anyway] and was stoked that both my new friends were in my group. Today houses got to cut so I was a little nervous, I got my list and it read:

-Bellini
-Lemon Drop
-Margarita
-Bahamma Mama

I got cut from Martini, which hurt a little bit even though I didn't want them because it was like saying [or so I thought at the time] that my personality wasn't good enough. I was confused as to why Lemon Drop kept me, but I was excited to get another chance.

-Bellini: They had a super cute house and I really liked that thier house tours were one on one. They were all super friendly to me and seemed really interested in me. the only thing I didn't like was that they kinda trash talked Bahama Mama and that wasn't cool. However, I actually found out I have some mutual friends with a lot of girls because a lot of my older guy friends from high school joined fraternities here so it was fun to have some common ground. I left feeling really optimistic, I knew I wanted to be a Bellini, I loved everything about them and they seemed to like me to.

-Lemon Drop: Thier house was absolutely gorgeous, which matched the girls themselves. This time it was 2 pnm's to 1 active. Unfortunately, the other pnm I was with was this cute little blonde cheerleader so I got completely ignored by the Lemon Drop...again! Seriously, was I that uninteresting? Why didn't they just put me out of my misery and drop me? I felt really awkward and just left feeling sad...my excitment from this round completely gone.

-Margarita: When I got to Margarita I tried to be friendly but I was still a little frustrated from my expierences with Lemon Drop. I probably was miserable to talk to at first but after I started talking to a few of the girls I started becoming more happy and I found out I actually had a lot in common with a lot of the girls.

-Bahama Mama: When I got to this house, I was a little disappointed because the physical house where they lived was my least favorite, but I figured I shouldn't make a decision based on that alone. I was still really excited about Bahama Mama and I felt really at home with the girls, a lot of them really remembered things about me and joked around with me.

I was still torn between Bahama Mama and Bellini but I ranked it like this:

-Bahama Mama
-Bellini
-Margarita
-Lemon Drop [I had still given up hope]

Who do you think invited me back for pref? Who do you think is APhi?

OK, I'll bite...or drink..if your story ends with a twist could it be Lemon Drop?
