I can understand the frustration felt by the other groups, but when a large competition is created involving a sizable prize there should be ironclad rules and nothing should be left to be misunderstood by those that enter. If you are not allowed to use steps that are "known" to be of another groups it should also be stated.

baci, I agree with you! Congrats to the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha. I know Phi Mu did some sort of step-show at Alabama, Auburn (or one of those southern schools-sorry-don't remember) and they did awesome. I found it online. In fact, I hope one of my sorority's chapters enters the Sprite Step-Show and does just as well.
I think we should embrace the fact that NPCers won a competition mainly set aside for D9 groups.

Why?
And please be mindful of the language you're using. These competitions are not "set aside" for D9 groups, they were conceived, originated, and perfected by D9 groups with Sprite coming aboard to market their product.

I think its great that they got involved. When I said "set aside" that is pretty much what I meant, but thank you for correcting me. I think that people should not be going into the Zeta forum and start complaining that they won when FSUZeta made this whole thread to congratulate her sisters. If Phi Mu won and there was this much of an uproar about it, I would just be proud my sisters won and not care what other people thought.
Good for you ZTA!

If you are talking about either or both of these http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr2IL-4VSbM

I laughed. The 2009 one was better and the steps were tighter. But the package was still overall clown worthy.
NPHC orgs also get clowned if they suck or do elementary level steps in a stepshow. It especially happens when step teams are just starting out. They usually come harder the second and third time around. Maybe Phi Mu will tighten themselves up for the 3rd round. I hope they know how to do it themselves and don't have NPHC step masters.
ETA: Now THIS was tight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqvTAtD7k5Q Stick to this, Phi Mu.

Just like we tell new posters here on GC to learn the culture here before posting and asking outrageous and repetitive questions, those new or outside of BGLO's and the traditional stepping culture, should study the artform and learn something about it first before just trying to step because it looks fun or cool. If ZTA was concerned about the tradition, not just stepping, they would've known that copying steps is a no no and innovation/creativity is the name of the game. Call it Stepping 101.

This kinda reminds me of Save the Last Dance, when Sean Patrick Thomas and Julia Stiles' characters go to the black club and her dancing is a hot mess and the black girl "shows her how it's done."
Ok not exactly the same thing but the club was called "Stepps" too. Coincidence? You decide.

LOL
I'm watching "Diary of a Mad Black Woman." The sistah that he's cheating on her with rolled up in the crib with an attitude talkin' 'bout "Is she wearing the dress I picked out?"
Coincidence? Hmmmmmm....

From where I sit, Epsilon chapter not only deserved the award because of their performance, but because of the humility and respect shown by the step team leader in the post-performance interview where she talked about the honour and respect ZTA has for the NPHC, and how graciously she displayed love for her sorority without disparaging others.
Now if only I could make out what the women were chanting during their routine...
Again, well deserved congratulations, ZTA. I look forward to seeing you -- and other NPC sororities -- participating in step shows in the future (are you listening, Alpha Phi?)

This was not a pageant. You do not win because you give good answers or show humility. $100,000 was at stake. That is all.

Also stepping is about innovation, creativity, and originality and some are quite pissed that ZTA brought nothing new and instead used all D9 steps in their show, even the stepping on the raised platform. Some say that if the judges were greek and not celebrities, that they would not have won doing other orgs' steps which is not looked upon favorably by those that know and appreciate stepping. So this is what all the feelings are about.
But I say congrats to ZTA. I just hope they will bring the creativity and originality next year. I think more people will respect their performance then. However, I can't be too supportive when you are doing steps that have been in my org for years and yes they had a little bit of everyone's steps in there. Most non-D9 step teams study us but make up new moves if they care about not copying and disrespecting us. ZTA needs to do the same.

Well said.
