At UT (univ. of tennessee) quote isn't set till after the second round of recruitment (skit round), but it can change depending on the number of girls that drop out. Last year quota was 48 with 2 add ones making it 50. This year we are expecting 1000+ girls to be going through recuritment in the fall so it'll be much more. Good luck to everyone though and I hope everyone meets their quota!

Maybe on your campus the smaller groups will survive, but when you have the average sorority size of 200 members and one has about 100 members-they are not going to survive if the numbers continue to drop. The houses are expensive to keep upand to be able to compete with the other sororities you have to have the money which requires having enough members to provide that money. Fraternities are different. They do not have standard housing most of the time and I know some that live in little houses that are very inexpensive thus they can have 20 members and still survive. On sorority row the houses are not cheap to keep up and run.

BTW, most of the girls on my campus that went through rush did not want to be in a small house. While quota was about 55 for most houses, the smaller houses would maybe get 5-10 girls.

Good Gravy!!!!! After reading all of this about needing 150 girls to keep your house running......I'm glad my university didn't allow sorority housing!!!!

When I was in school, total was 50. We had 4 groups: 2 who were at 45 or 50 members, 2 who hung around 25-30. It worked because those who didn't want to be with 50 other girls were ecstatic to be with the smaller groups. (There were a lot more differences but I won't go into them here. . .)

Well, couple years after I left the system did a complete 180. The two big chapters lost at least 20 members (EACH!) due to some sort of disagreement, chapter split, or something (never got the full story)...The 2 smaller chapters suddenly were at total.

Now, it's back to the original scenario, but I don't think anyone is at total because of low enrollment. Quota for this past year was 11, which means only 44 girls finished rush.

I don't know what's going on there, but it makes an interesting case study. Just goes to show how each campus is SOOOOOOOO different!!!

(BTW: The university is looking into building sorority houses that will sleep 4 girls each.)

I would be concerned about those girls who didnt want to be in a "small" house. It sounds as if the girls going through your rush are there for the "image" and not the sisterhood. I was a charter member of my groups and we were small in the begining. Women didnt see that as a disadvantage at my campus.

And I am equally concerned about your assumption that a house that always makes quota and has 150 members cannot have strong sisterhood.

Unfortunately these small houses had to worry about a lot of stuff-for instance how they were going to fill their house and pay dues. One of the sororities started renting out rooms to college students (females only of course) b/c they could not make their house payments. One of my best friends from HS was in this chapter and though she loved it there were so many struggles that the other chapters did not have to worry about. It was stressful for her and the other girls at times. I did not join a larger house for the "image", I knew her and her sororities situation and I did not want to be in the same situation, neither did many of the rushees-esp. the older ones that knew it was a small house and knew that this would create a different sorority experience as far as the social aspect goes. That was the reality on my campus. Obviously yours is different.

We don't know the 2002 quota yet, but last Fall's was 55 girls. My CH already has 170, so... !

My school had houses and in that case total is important and quota was just an easy way to fill the house. If you make quota then you usually don't have to COB at my school b/c total is only 65. There are cases where you graduate many members and then you will have to COB to total, but that is few and far b/w.

I do agree that sometimes the pressure is too overwhelming to get to total, but when a mortgage is concerned....this coming from a House Corp president...you really reley on numbers.

We are in the process of securing housing for our group and we need to have a solid base to start from and quota is just the first step.

I guess at schools that are not housed the number issue is different, but I would assume they budget for a certain number of members.

Okay, I'm totally clueless about being on the other side of rush, since next August will be my first time. I thought that the smaller chapters could give bids to more girls to increase their membership and the larger chapters had to accept less girls. (Again, to avoid the larger chapters from just getting larger) I know last year, quota didn't include girls that were sophmores older, they were considered free. (That changed this year) Is this a southern thing or am I mistaken? Also, for the Panhellenic thing, just a suggestion, why not have a representative from every sorority on campus so that the everyone is represented.

In formal everyone is allowed to take quota, but if you still aren't at house total after quota is taken, you can keep bidding up to total.

Ex. house total 60, quota for rush is 10.

ABC has 55 girls. They can take quota, then they're done.

DEF has 45 girls. They can take the quota of 10 plus give bids to 5 more girls.
