Missing Sisters
OK, so I have a little problem with my chapter right now. As a senior, I understand that sometimes you get busy with graduation preparations and work, as well as tough capstone courses, etc.
What I don't understand is the total disrespect by younger members that choose not to be active and involved. I am super busy with all of my activities, but I still find time for chapter and other Phi Mu functions. It's really discouraging because I honestly know that we are the BEST chapter on campus and could be even better.
Phi Mu is supposed to be for a lifetime, but some sisters act like they don't even care. If they were seniors taking 18 hours and working, I would understand, but these girls are like sophmores. They find time to go out with each other and all of us, but they never participate in scheduled activities.
Do any of ya'll have any experience with sisters like this? How do you keep girls active without being pushy? I might note that our advisor is totally MIA until she wants to be around, so we run our chapter on our own 99.9% of the time.
Phi Mu Love,

Sister I hear ya!!! It gets worse with each semester. No matter how hard we try to get the girls to be involved, there are a few that will go to extremes, but many just sit there. How hard is it to find girls to be big sisters to 2 girls? Especially when the pledge class the semester before had like 15 girls. Grrrr!!!!!!

I think every chapter experiences members like this. The thing is, you can't force someone to be active. You can fine them for not coming to reqired events but as long as they pay their $$ they're technically in good standing. Unfortunately some people only join a Greek Organization for the letters...not really caring what letters they are and their significance.
We had what was called a Sunshine committee. If you would like details feel free to PM me. But maybe you could utilize this committee to call up these MIA members and invite them to come to events with them. This will not only get the MIA members participating with the chapter again, but it will also strengthen/create new bonds of friendship within the chapter.

Another idea, although not a very productive one, would be to send them to standards. We have a standards committee that deals (very confidentially) with sisters who are not upholding the creed of Phi Mu (that includes being a good sister and participating). PM me if you want details. It's just a way to fins out why they're not coming and to see if there's anything that can be done to help.
Another suggestion would be some high-quality sisterhood events if you can make them exciting enough to entice these girls. We have our share of uninvolved sister, but they usually pull through when we need them most and surprise us.

I duno if standards would be the right place for uninvolved sisters, but it may work. I've been sent to standards and placed on discipline a few times for my behavior towards other sisters (ie- talking bad about them) and I learned my lesson. I like to think that I've become a better sister from learning from my mistakes. Standards works! So maybe it is the answer to the uninvolvement question!

Hey, ya'll! Thanks for all the advice. We're done with chapter for the year, so I hope everyone will ban together for Rush. That's always how it seems to be, though. Everyone is around for like 2 months after Rush and then disappear. I am mostly just disappointed with the new girls. One of them was a legacy, and we just found out that her sister did the same thing. She was at VSU in 1997 and went MIA shortly after she initiated, too.
Anyway, I appreciate it!!
