Maybe its just my perception because of the "show a picture of your house" thread...but it seems like a lot of organizations built HUGE houses in the last 10 years.

Will the economy have an effect on our chapters that are burdened with huge mortgages?

Maybe. If they maintain the membership numbers needed to support the huge house, things will be fine.
