Is every man a man?

Recently, one of my brothers transferred to another University where there is a Lambda Chi chapter. The chapter there voted not to let him join, because of his image was different than theirs. As a few of the brothers did accept him, and began to hang out with him. It became clear why he was not accepted into the chapter there. It was because of his sexual orientation. I go to a liberal arts college, and I’m a theatre major. I’m also from the south. Throughout my life I’ve dealt with homosexuals. I see how we southerners can view Homosexuals. I’ve come to the conclusion that they are (contrary to popular belief) human beings. So why can’t they be brothers? I had hoped that ignorance would not be able to travel within our bond. So, is every man truly a man? My first response to them not accepting my brother wasn’t one of surprise. Chapters are different all across the nation, and this is a good thing. If you looked at my chapter we cover the entire spectrum of majors, races, religions and sexual orientations. I know that each Zeta tries to put forth the image they see fit. As previously stated, I understand why they would not want Josh to join their chapter. What bothers me is the absolute cold shoulder he was given by people, MEN, that are supposed to be his brothers. Terms like “faggot” were used to describe him. We see brothers from different places all the time, and one thing I especially like to say to out younger members is, “they are who they are, but they’re still a brother.” Why isn’t this more accepted in the 21st century? Am I alone in thinking that the treatment of my brother is appalling? Have a missed the point of the motto which made me join this Fraternity?

I agree

I completely agree with you. Something like that would never be allowed at my chapter in New Orleans.

General Assembly 2002 Resolution

I call your attention to a resolution passed at the 2002 General Assembly. The link is http://lambdachi.org/resources.aspx?id=1132

"Be It Resolved that membership selection on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, or disability has no place within Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. The Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, therefore, condemns all discrimination and will actively seek to prevent it in all of its Chapters."

I'm not aware of all the facts and circumstances involved, but this could provide a starting point for analysis.

Having been on the cheer squad at my college, I got used to having many friends and teammates who were gay. I'm a bit surprised that a chapther would cite that as a reason, since that's flat out asking for a major lawsuit and a lot of bad publicity.

The above-mentioned resolution from General Assembly flat out bans that kind of exclusion. I really doubt this guy would want to be a member of that chapter anymore anyway, but the chapter in mention should know the rules before they go out on their own and make such a decision.
