Can't wait to see how it all turns out!

And yes, this story has taken me back to great memories-got that lemon juice in my hair, have cut class to lie out in the sun, (we usually started on the first warm day in February; I remember one day laying out in the sun, and the three days later playing in the snow! This is Georgia, ya know.) Marvin Gaye is playing on the record player, we're going to see Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose in the gym tonight, and then on to the Sigma Chi house where we'll shag to Carolina beach music. Thank you, John and Mrs. Grace anyone? College-gotta love it!!!

Now, back to the dorm...

I remember baby oil and iodine! I think that was around in the 50's, lol (and NO, I wasn't a teen/college girl back then, lol.)

Also I remember Everclear and Mad Dog 20/20. Never drank the stuff, thank goodness!

In the back of the sorority dorm was a little grassy area where the sorority dorm girls would go lay out. I swear there was this girl from another sorority that would start to lay out March 1st until September. She had very dark, long hair. She would get so dark tanned, I've always wondered if she ever got cancer. Hmmm..just remembered maybe I should ask an alumna I know from that chapter from that era.

Remember John Romaine pocketbooks?? They were the Coach, etc. of today. My mom had one but I never did. I was soo jealous of the girls that had one. Guess that's why I go buy my own pocketbooks and jewelry these days.

I think I have figured out the campus for sure and at least half of the chapters. I can't wait to hear the conclusion!

Don't be so hard on your 18 year-old self. Based on your descriptions, that's exactly how I would rank the chapters as well. From your descriptions, it sounds like all 3 were regarded as very desirable chapters, so it doesn't sound like "tiers" made a difference.

Fez was right to be 3rd, because although you liked them and they seemed to like you, the main pull was that everyone seemed to want this chapter.

Donna and Jackie are close, but I would have gone with Donna first just because it sounds like a better fit for you. You were very lucky to be torn over 3 excellent chapters.

Anxiously awaiting the conclusion.

Me too, though the retro aspect does make it a bit harder, since not all the same chapters are there and there is bound to be some musical chairs of housing.

How can you ladies figure the school out like that?? I have no clue especially since it's retro.

I'm also waiting for the conclusion- can't wait!

Oh, YES! I saved up my allowance (50 cents a week) and my pay from my little job...put one on layaway at a local "dress shop" (remember those?). Then I saved up so I could have my initials put on it.
My clothes may have been made by my mom and/or come from Grant's, but I was tres chic with my John Romaine pocketbook!!

Ha ha I think VP shares my interest in Greek history. The campus is relatively simple to figure out in this particular case, and if you look at what groups closed soon after her rush time frame, it confirms it.

ETA: There are a lot of clues if you are familiar with Greek life at other schools - even if just by reading GC or volunteering in your own org. We know it is a large state school, but not SEC. It is competitive, but only has 13 NPC chapters. It has at least one traditionally Jewish chapter, and that chapter is somewhat smaller than others. House architecture styles include Italian and Spanish villa (very few locations would have that) as well as modern and classic Georgian. 4 chapters were struggling with numbers. School is in a large town (yet everyone seems to know each other.)

We used to do that same thing! But not with a box. And we would tell the girls that same thing too

Ok...I was in college in the 70s...I never heard of Johnny Romaine purses. I remember Louis Vuitton (sack purse), Gucci (satchel...I gave mine to charity in the mid 80s....what an idiot I was...). What did they look like?

In the end of this thread please post the college. I did when I wrote my story...no recriminations, and I would be really interested.

You can all stop guessing. I purposefully changed and omitted a few details in order to keep JSU and myself anonymous. These details do not change my rush story at all; they just serve to obfuscate the location. Greek life has changed there a lot, and I did not want my online legacy to the school and Greek system I love so much to be translated as "well, ABC is really horrible at JSU ...... they have been since at least the 70s!" to anyone who might google the school and any chapter now or into the future. Rest assured knowing that no one who has sent me a PM has guessed correctly.

And on with the story...

Bid Day
When we wake up the next morning, everyone is a nervous wreck, including me. After a fitful night’s sleep and late night conversation with my folks, I am even more convinced that I want to be a Donna. A few days ago, I didn’t know a thing about sororities. Now I am praying for a bid like my life depends on it.

Bid day is actually in the evening, so we had all day to marinate. At this point in time on my campus, there were no phone calls. If you didn’t receive a bid, you found that out when bids were handed out. You received an envelope with a card in it that said you had not been invited to join any sorority. Yikes! Since classes have not started yet, a bunch of girls from our floor decide to go shopping and then take in a movie. We make a pact that we will NOT discuss anything rush related. It doesn’t do much to soothe our nerves, but it does provide us with a little distraction. We’re back in our dorm by five and get ready for the big event. I wear yet another sundress and platforms.

The activity center is a mad house, buzzing with anticipation and anxiety. The various sisters are standing in groups outside, holding huge banners. Inside, the RCs are standing in their own areas holding up big signs with their names on them. Once everyone makes it to their RC, they begin handing out the bid cards. There are screams. There are tears. Girls begin to dash outside to join their new sisters and make the trek back to their new homes for the festivities. I open up my bid card and read it with stunned disbelief. It reads …………..
