Islamic FisherPrice Doll...
Fisher Price's Little Mommy Cuddle and Coo doll looks like any doll.
She's pink, has a pacifier and a bottle and she does cuddle and coo. She also has a message that parents might not be too thrilled about: "Islam is the Light."

Apparently there's a discrepancy between what people are hearing and what the doll was programmed to say.

I can't stand toys that make noise anyway ... anything that stops people from buying these things is all good with me.

A) What would a three year old girl in a Christian home really pick up after hearing this? I don't think I knew what Islam was until I was in high school (friend converted).
B) Even as a Christian this really doesn't bother me. What does, is the way these people are reporting. They are encouraging others to call Fisher Price and complain and acting as if all hell will break loose and making it seem as if any Islamic message is just wrong. It is ONE of many dolls. It doesn't say "death to (insert citizens of a country here)" it just says something that sounds similar to "Islam is the light" which I personally do not find to be a bad message.

Completely unrelated anecdote:
Back in undergrad days, I worked at RadioShack. One Christmas, we received a shipment including a Barbie cell phone/pager set -- very cheaply made, no doubt from China... probably painted with lead.
At any rate, the pager when activated was supposed to say "Messages are clear." Instead, in very garbled form, it said "Messages f*** you."
The prostitute Barbie pager.

This totally reminds of that fiasco in the mid-90's or so (I was a kid), when parents were complaining to Disney about some "messages" that they were suppsedly hearing in their movies.
I don't remember all of them, but I specifically remember a parent saying that Aladdin says "All good kids take off their clothes" (or something to that effect) in the movie.

I have to go with what epchick says here. I read the article first and listened to the audio on the newscast and I have to say, I could "hear" the Islam is the Light thing in the broadcast, but like ep said, I don't know that I would have if I hadn't just read it.
When I listened to the snopes audio file, I heard the ma-ma-ma stuff much more clearly and it sounded more like a "goodnight" to me than even "light" (where is the Satan thing? I didn't hear anything approaching that). If I'd only heard that file and hadn't read what people were saying it was, I wouldn't have picked out "Islam is the" either. So I'd probably still buy it as is, but I understand the company's response to the hysteria, it's just easier to get rid of it rather than try to change their minds.

OMG yes, I remember this! It was a big scandal back in the day, but I never heard it.
It's the same thing when Britney Spears came out with her "slave for you" song and people were having heartattacks because they supposedly heard "I just wanna have sex with you" instead of the correct lyric--"i just wanna dance next to you"
But people are sooo fearful of stupid shit nowadays. Seriously is a 5 year old going to understand that the doll says "Islam is the light" or even understand what that means?
ETA: I think it says something like "don't turn off the light" but whatevs.

How ridiculous! I can't tell what it's saying, but people are definitely overreacting. It has way more syllables than "Mama" though so someone messed up.

I heard it
I definitely heard "Islam is the light". But, I don't know if I'd have heard it if I hadn't just read the article. Nothing about satan.

Not saying anything about my beliefs... But in order to hear that, you have to play it in reverse... A la "The Exorcist" with projectile vomit...
