Bringing Delta Zeta chapter to Montclair State

My friend and I are interested in bringing a Delta Zeta chapter to MSU, but we dont know exactly how to do so. So far, there are 23 girls in our interest group, and we have gotten alot of support from other chapters in NJ and National headquarters. However, we have not gotten a positive answer from other sororities on campus, saying that "Montclair wont let us". This was told to us by another local sorority. There are 17 sororities on campus and 4 of those are NPC sororities(Tri-Sig, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Delta Tau, and Delta Phi Epsilon....however, DPhiE just got suspended for hazing) and we feel that DZ is exactly what we need and would be a great addition to Montclair State.
We have been trying to find out more about whether MSU is open for expansion....

Any suggestions to help us in this process would be greatly appreciated.

Talk to the office of greek life and the Panhellenic Council, they are the ones who would know if campus is open to expansion and how you would need to go about doing it.

The University Panhellenic will decide if the campus is open for expansion. If and when they do, they will have to follow NPC Green Book rules as to how it will occur. I would suggest you search for threads regarding expansion.

This thread has a lot of info about bringing a new sorority to campus:

http://greekchat.com/gcforums/showthread.php?t=93174

Your school's Greek Life Director/Advisor would know whether your campus is currently open for expansion. You need to contact them directly.

Generally, all NPC sororities on campus need to be at campus total [max size] before expansion will be considered. Your school's Panhellenic Council will also need to vote to open the campus for expansion. Delta Zeta is most likely not going to consider expanding to your campus unless they know that you have followed the proper protocol and the school is officially open for expansion.

OK, this is like the zillionth interest group at a NJ school where no one is at total. I'm starting to feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.

FYI: Just because you think the DZs at ______ University are rich and gorgeous, doesn't mean a chapter at your school will be like that. The chapters are made up of who's at that school. A bunch of completely different girls are not going to appear just because a different sorority shows up.

Have you approached any of the other sororities about joining as a large group? If they are under total they might welcome this idea.

Montclair is NOT and will NOT be open for expansion/extension anytime soon. It concerns me for you to say that DZ HQ is along for the ride in support of this. Based on your mistatements about DPhiE, I suspect it is that you are not being truthful. DZ has some large expansions on their horizon and a campus where all groups are under total and potential membership is 30 women is not a sound business decision for this strong successful NPC group to entertain unless there are sound reasons to (i.e. the national president's daughter is going there in the Fall)

DPhiE is NOT suspended and your disparaging remarks reflect negatively on your attempts to establish a new group. With 17 groups and 4 NPC groups, there is NO need for a new group - there is no unfilled need (everything is covered, latino, npc, nphc etc).

23 women in interest group is a very successful recruitment - you would do well to see if one of the struggling established groups would like to accept your group as a new member class and then your strength and eagerness will become the backbone of the org (leadership etc)

The Panhellenic sororities must vote to bring on a new group but with all groups under campus total, they are not meeting their own obligations to their national orgs and therefore would not in favor of expansion.

I live a few minutes from the campus and this scenario played out at Hofstra in the 1990s - too many groups came on - membership could not be supported, some groups closed and quota is 8 each year.

It is possible that DZ has a letter of interest on file at Montclair. A letter of interest doesn't really mean much, just that they would like to be considered to present if the campus should open for Extension. I doubt DZ is actually working with this interest group to make Extension happen at Montclair despite the membership trends, especially since that's not how Extension works. Or the OP might be lying/embellishing/exaggerating.

I was on the Panhellenic Extension Committee during my time at Maryland, so I do have experience in this area.

Some questions before I can say anything else:

1. I see that there are 4 local ISC groups. Is your "interest group" one of these locals or are you merely an interest group?

2. If you are purely an interest group and not an established local, did you and the other women in your group go through recruitment?

3. What is Panhellenic chapter total at Montclair? How many members does each NPC and ISC chapter have?

4. Tell us about recruitment at Montclair. Is it fully structured, partially/minimally structured, or continuous? Do the NPCs and the ISCs participate in recruitment together or separately?

5. Why does your interest group want to affiliate with an NPC and why DZ?

I might add that this is info that Delta Zeta is most likely going to want to know when responding to your extension request/interest form.

Also, this needs to be repeated: Your campus NEEDS to be officially open for expansion/extension before a new sorority can colonize. That is the most critical part of asking a national sorority to consider colonizing your interest group. DZ is most likely not going to proceed with you any further because the campus is not open.

There was a group that expressed interest in expansion last year, and the vote was a unanimous no. I doubt much has changed since then.
