A Sports Journalist Says A Bitter Goodbye
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/11317...luca28.article
I'm not sure how many of you know of Jay Mariotti, but he recently resigned from the Chicago Sun-Times. He didn't have one of the best reputations in the sports journalism biz, but the reaction from his former paper is interesting, to say the least.
I think the Murray Chass split from the New York Times was almost as rough (if you read Chass' blog), but this is the first time I remember a newspaper lashing out at one of its former columnists, especially so soon after his departure.

As a long-time subscriber of the Sun-Times, you can count me as one of the masses who is thrilled with his departure. I found him to be arrogant, less-than-truthful, and a egotist.

THANK GOD!!
I have disliked this man since I was a child! I remember reading his articles as a kid and found him to be such a jerk. I'm glad he left.

Mariotti is an absolute douche, but this is a total hatchet-job on the guy. It's borderline hypocritical, to my mind.
But seriously, fuck Jay Mariotti - he's an absolute dinosaur (even though he isn't a million years old, like Chass), making his claims about the viability of print even more ironic. Touch the third rail, Jay.

There's an Atlanta Journal Constitution writer that I wish would depart.

Now, that's comedy.
The sad thing is that he still has his ESPN talking head job. Ugh, the guy brought it all on himself. You don't insult everyone in a town like Chicago and expect to get a bouquet of flowers and a nice bottle of wine as a parting gift. Ozzie Guillien must be a very happy guy.
Did he actually resign, or was he forced out?

From what I've read, he resigned, but he did it last minute. He just signed a 3-year extension with the paper, so depending on the contract, it would have been tough to force him out.
The paper never checked him (to my knowledge) when he wrote garbage throughout the years, so they hold some responsibility for the journalistic monster he's become.
As for ESPN, it's gotten so far away from the "journalism" part of the sports journalism business that he should have a long career at the network.
