1. prior to-elementary school, to be exact.
2. i just knew that this was the org. for me. my mother and 2 aunts are AKAs. i got to study them and the ladies in my mother's chapter.
3. my family moved to IL, we didn't know anyone. my mom hooked up w/AKAs and chartered a chapter. they were so welcoming and sisterly, i knew that i wanted to be a member when i was older. i also went to the 1980 Boule in ATL. i had so much fun and learned a lot while there. all of those strong women in one org., it was just too much . no more research necessary!
4. Mu Pi/Spelman AKAs were some of the tightest women on campus. they only reinforced my decision.
5. i talked to my roommate's friend. she was very nice, positive and encouraged me to pursue membership.
6. yes.
7. i smiled and told my mom's friend that my decision was made. she said she still loves me
8. my first Boule as an AKA-1996 in Baltimore. the city was awash in pink and green. i had a wonderful time. i was so excited b/c i could participate and not be a spectator.
9. persistence is the key. if you want this, and you have the requirements, meet members. attend public functions. and assomeone said, don't rely on the internet. get out and do the legwork necessary to make yourself known and attractive to our members. be assertive, not aggressive. know the difference.
10. well, i could stroll a little better. ditto on steppin'

Re: Greek Version of 10 Queries -- (Really 9...)

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?
in college

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?
attending events; interacting with the women on campus as Black Women and not as Greeks

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?
the nationally and locally known members

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?
definitely! the sorors on campus were the leaders of many campus organizations; they were the movers and shakers from whom I could learn so much

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)
a lot of people were surprised when I showed up at the Rush

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?
indirectly

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?
I hadn't decided at that point so I just played it off

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?
my first road trip to my first Regional Conference

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?
go with your gut; always do what is right for you, not for your mother, teachers, friends or mate

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?

I've always wanted AKA. I've known since I was 8.

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?

AKA was the only organization that I knew about until I got older (maybe high school). Then during college, I did my research on all of the other orgs. BUt, AKA was DEEP IN MY HEART!

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?

My cousin. She was the first person to introduce me to AKA and I never forgot

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

As Soror WenD mentioned, the sorors of Mu Pi were TIGHT. THey were a together group of sorors. They were dynamic women, who were doing great things on and off campus

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

I participated in campus events, actually became friends with other interests, and spoke to sorors. I think my interest was known

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?

No

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

N/A

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?

I have a couple:Calling the cousin who introduced me to AKA right after I crossed and calling her soror for the first time and attending my first national conference with my Soror Bestfriend PearlEssence, and Kodaka & ADivine

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

Attend the functions sponsored by the org and get to know the people in the chapter. ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT ---KEEP YOUR GRADES UP!

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? ( ...i.e, I would have pledged undergrad/I would have pledged earlier to have more time with my sands/ships/linesisters/ I would have stayed in contact with my linesisters moreso/been more involved on campus prior to becoming greek/I would have took time out to participate in a step show and etc)

Honestly, I would have liked to cross into MuPi chapter, but I don't regret how I came in (I love my chapter)

Re: Greek Version of 10 Queries -- (Really 9...)

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?

Nope. I didn't even really know about BGLO's until I actually came to college.

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?
Talking to the brothers, researching background information, websites, written materials, books, etc.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?
The most significant influence was the brothers themselves and the national programs.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

Yep.

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

Well one of my good friends at the time had just crossed so I talked to him alot. Also I pretty much knew of the chapter already in some fashion so I just talked to them.

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?

Nope.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

n/a

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?

Probate is #1. #2 is participating in the 300+ hymn at nationals. Now that really lets you know what fraternity is all about; I wish I could package the feeling I had when singing that hymn with all those bruhs and give it to interests. It sums up the meaning of fraternity better than words ever could.

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

Please please please do your research. Find out as much as you can about ALL greek organizations, fraternal organizations, etc., etc. Not only will it assist you in your decision, but it shows sincerity. I can't stress that enough- DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!

Also if you really want to be part of XYZ don't get easily discouraged. Just because this person or that person made some comment you didn't like don't judge the entire organization or even the entire chapter. Nobody is perfect and people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Finally I would say if you're trying to join a BGLO start showing your committment to the Black community NOW if you have not done so. We want people who are going to work towards achieving our lofty goals- the last thing we need is dead weight.

I DEFINITELY would've done it earlier. Definitely.

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?

I decided during my last year in college.

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?

RESEARCH! I looked at all of the organizations. I first tried to understand their history. Could I identify with the founders? Were they people I admired? Then I looked at their national programs. Were they in line with what I beleived in as a person? Did they interest me? Finally, I looked at the membership as a whole. Did I honestly fit in with them? Could I look on a crowd of the members and be proud to call them my brothers? Once I looked at all three of those elements, Alpha was the only NPHC org that fit the criteria.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?

In a sense, I got influenced by folks after the fact.....I had a roommate who was an Alpha, but I was never that interested in it when we lived together.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

There were no members on the yard when i made my decision.

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

I first ran the idea past my ex-roommate....he thought me and Alpha might be a good fit, so I should at least try. Once I decided that the time was right, I approached an old high school teacher who is an Alpha for advice. He put me in contact with people from the grad chapter I wanted to join, and then I started attending events.

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?

Nope.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

N/A

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?

I really don't know.....perhaps when I went to my old high school and gripped all the Alpha teachers.

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

Make sure that the PEOPLE are the right fit with you.

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? I wouldn't have changed much of anything, to be perfectly honest. I love my chapter and the fact that it is inter-generational. I am glad I waited until I was emotionally and mentally mature enough to make the committment.
