Help Me Out Gc! Excuse Needed

Hey All

I have an interview on Tuesday at 4 pm. I need a good excuse to get off of work at 3 pm to get there. Doctor's visit is out. Car trouble is out. I have no kids. Anyone have any bright ideas??????

You all are smart folks I know you can come up with something good for me. PLEEEEEAAAAASSSSE help.

Can you tell your office that you have a relative or old friend coming into town and that you need to meet them at the airport since they are unfamiliar with the area?

Well I would but that actually happened with me last month. My cousin came into town from Jamaica and I had to pick him up at the airport (which I didn't take time off to do) but then I also had to drop him off (which I took a day off to do - we were taking trains to long island).

I don't want to use that one since it actually happened, lol. If push come shove that is probably it though.

Hey Lovelyivy!

This worked for me when I had a job interview. FAKE SICK!! But start gradual.

Like when you first get to work, when folks ask "How are you this morning?" say something like "not good" or that your stomach hurts. Then keep a sad, pitiful look on your face throughoutt he morning, especially when your boss can see you. Start "coughing" too especially if your boss comes over to your cubicle. Since you need to be outta there by 1pm so you can go home, relax, and change go to the bathroom often that morning. Then about 12:30 go to your boss and say that you just threw up your lunch and you think its best if you go home because you might be coming down with something. Before you know it, you should be in your car driving happily home to get ready for your interview.

For maximum effect, you could actually start this the afternoon before the day of your interview, so that way by the morning of your interview, your co-workers would have already ran their mouths to everyone about how you didn't feel well yesterday. This makes it even more believable.

To me (relative) honesty is the best policy. Just tell them you have an appointment that was rescheduled and you can't miss it. If they ask, tell them it is very personal and you prefer not to share the information.

Faking a family emergency is scary. Plus you have to back it up and I am not a great liar- I need something really simple that I can't mess up, lol.

dentist would work but I used that one already (Yeah my job is not that great - do you know that according to federal standards my student loans are actually twice the standard for unmanageable as they are 15% of my net income? Ergo the lying to go to interviews).

This one actually happened to me recently...

Food poisoning! (hint: don't ever, ever eat crab fettucini alfredo that has been in the fridge longer than 2 days)

Anyway, the thing that's great about it is that the sickness only lasts for a day, and most folks feel fine the next day -- so you could be sick and then perfectly fine the day after the interview, and no one would think anything of it.

I agree that honesty is usually the best policy. I think that you should tell them that you have an important personal appointment and that you need to leave early. Tell them that you are willing to make up the time you miss by staying late or arriving early if they want.
Here's a good excuse if you want dishonesty: It's tax time and you need to meet with an accountant. I don't condone this and if you get caught, I will disavow any knowledge of your activities and this proposed covert action. Good luck! This tape will self destruct in five seconds.

I did and caught an airplane to Minn/St. Paul for interview and got the job and next thing I know I am in Miami

Still do not speak Cubano!

I said I was sick after I called in and told a Secretary! She helped cover for me!!!!!!

I can't lie...not that I haven't tried, I just can't carry it off.
In order of choice-

I like the gradual illness and food poisoning.

Taxes

I also like the "really personal appointment" but depending on a lot of variables-I'd hate for them to think it WAS a Dr. and I was -
pregnant/thougt I was pregnant or had a STD.

Tell the truth -- at least in part.

Tell them you have a very personal appointment that can't be broken, ask for some personal time and hope they don't ask many questions.

If you lie and get caught -- and a lot of people do -- you're toast. It's a reason for termination in every company I've ever known.

Hmm... how about, you have a relative who's at the doctor/ophthalmologist/having surgery/etc and you have to go pick them up?

Having to meet with your tax accountant is a good one. Or, if it happens to be a local election day, say you have to go vote. (We had a primary here a few days ago, and I went to vote and was therefore late to work... no one minded)

Amen to that - be honest. Besides, being "sick" may or may not work - I've been legitimately sick, but couldn't go home due to a major unexpected problem

with a project we were working on - so I ended up working a 12 hour day, in agony....burning tracks in the carpet to the bathroom....

Honesty is the best policy - if you don't get the job, and, someone finds out you interviewed, yet gave a bogus excuse - that could be detrimental to your current employment situation....
