Hi Everyone
Hi, everyone! I am new here. I am here because I have some questions. I am not in a sorority, however I am interested in joining one. I just went back to school this semester, I am 24. Well I really am interested in joing a sorority and I was curious if my age would play a factor and also would the fact that I am already married be a problem. The university I attend is mostly a commuter school and the between the fraternities and sororities there are only about 1,000 members. From what I know, the girls seem very nice and people I have spoken to said they would be welcoming, but im just not sure. I was hoping you guys could give me some suggestions. Im not looking to join because all I wanna do is party, while partying is fun I am looking to join because I love that they are so involved with the community and all the charity work they do. I am also looking to make new friends that will be there for me. Thanks for any advice you have!!

While I can't speak for every school, I'd have to say that at a commuter school, you'd have a much easier time getting a bid as a 24 year old than at a more traditional school. The fact that you are married *may* be a turn-off to some, but the fact that girls in sororities said they'd be welcoming of you is already a good sign. Good luck!

I'd say, go for it! You'll never know until you try, at least go through recruitment for the experience. Also, work on getting recommendations, while your school may not require them, it won't hurt if you have a recommendation to each house to help you. Talk to your friends, relatives and see if they are a member of any of the sororities at your school that could write you a recommendation.

I can tell you at my old school, which was a commuter school, a 24 year old wouldn't have bothered us at all. The fact that you are married would have put a paus, but if we felt you were committed and were able to be at all the events and stuff, we would have been willing to take the chance.
Give it a try!

yes.
which is why this:

I'M AN UPPERCLASSMAN OR A NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT. SHOULD I EVEN TRY?
Depending on the university, recruitment is very competitive with most of the organizations vying for incoming freshmen with the highest GPAs and strongest resumes. At others, there is less emphasis. Regardless, at most universities an upperclassman will be at a slight, moderate or severe disadvantage over freshmen. Some schools may have a "free quota" where they can pledge as many upperclassman as they want outside of the "quota" (max. number of new members) that is set by the university. Others won't.
Also, on the same campus, some chapters may want more underclassmen while others don't have this preference. It really just depends on the university, the year and each chapter's interests and needs during recruitment. For example, if a chapter has just graduated off a large number of members, they may be looking for more underclassmen to fill their house with 4 years of continuity. Others may not be so concerned. And still others may be looking to pad their membership with sisters who are very involved on campus, are star athletes, etc.
If you're coming in as a transfer student or upperclassmen, you may not have as many options as a freshman. Know that the early rounds of cuts will have more to do with your class rank. Either way, you don't know what your "chances" are unless you try! Having strong grades and campus activities helps a lot. A classy reputation and friends in the sororities are also very helpful if you've been on campus for a year or more, or are a transfer.
If you’re a non-traditional student (IE: married, 24+, a parent, etc.) you may want to look more closely at the sororities at your school. If there are no members in the sororities representing where you are at in your life, you may not enjoy membership in a collegiate chapter at this university, and the sorority members may find that they don’t have much in common with you. This is especially true for older non-traditional students or mothers.
This should not discourage the non-traditional student you if you are genuinely interested in NPC membership. After all, recruitment is a time to see if you click well with the sororities and part of this is having a commonality between you. Research all of your available options and go with what makes you the most comfortable.
For both upperclassmen students and nontrads looking to join a sorority, but for whom NPC membership is not a possibility, investigate all Greek Life Organizations within your university and non-collegiate community. They are out there and you will find the right sisterhood, regardless of whether it includes Greek letters!

1000 Greeks at a commuter school? Wow!
A commuter school close to where I live has a combination of locals and nationals, and from what I hear, recruitment is very relaxed. The chapters are not so much there for partying, but more for philanthropy and casual socializing.
I take it the chapters at your school don't have houses.

It depends on the school and the individual chapters. Some of them may be open to having a 24 year old married member, while others might not. There's no way to predict whether or not you'll get a bid. There's no harm in trying though.

Yes the chapters do have houses. They are housed on campus.

If you go to school in PA, I think I have an idea what school you may be attending. If I'm right-all the NPC chapters on that campus are really great (as are ALL the NPC chapters) and they seem very welcoming. Good luck with recruitment!
