Mary Hartman Mary Hartman

Anyone else familiar with this sitcom?

I picked up the DVD set a couple of months ago at Barnes & Noble because it looked interesting.

I watched the first 2 episodes and was bored out of my mind. But I could not get the stupid thing out of my head.

Over recent weeks, I watched an episode here and there and it was growing on me.

Then today, I spent over 2 hours watching the mid section of season 1 and it just hit me like a thunderbolt that this is one of the funniest and most amazing shows I have ever seen!

It is very dry and incredibly subtle. So takes some getting used to, but this is really good stuff.

My mom used to let me stay up on school nights to watch this. The station that carried it ran it after the 10 p.m. news because it was so "controversial."

I loved it. It became a forbidden desire after it went off and reruns were banned. It was waaayyy before its time.

"I know, I must have been born under an unlucky star. You know, I have filled out entry blanks for every single drawing in the supermarket for the last twelve years, and the only thing I ever won was a coupon for a small little jar of tomato paste. But they were out of tomato paste, and by the time they got more in, my coupon had expired. And now I have venereal disease."

When I was a TV director in Detroit, we used to air this show after the 11:00 PM news every night.

It was a big deal here in Fort Worth when hometown boy Norm Alden drowned in a bowl of chicken soup!

yeah, it would be cool if they brought that to TV Land. It's like, I enjoyed it, but I.didn't.know.why.

Wow, that's a blast from my past. I was addicted to it during the early 70's while attending college.

Okay, so I went over to YouTube to see if my hatred for that show has passed. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6IieOvaY-0c

It hasn't.

I always confuse Mary Hartman with Soap. Soap (a spoof on soap operas, with two related families as the main characters) had one of the best lines I've ever heard on tv, and I'm trying to remember it. It was when Jody (the first openly gay man on tv) was marrying a hooker, and a family member was appalled. His mother said (and I paraphrase), "Well, his father was abducted by aliens, his brother talks through a ventroliquist dummy, his grandfather still thinks he's living during World War II, (much more, I can't remember). And she's a hooker. I think he's marrying up!"
