Total novice here

How does this whole process work. At my school we're not allowed to rush until we have twelve credits (which is second semester). Does that affect anything?

How do I find a good fraternity that's not all about drinking and partying?! I know that most of them don't party all the time, but how do I get to know the fraternities? I know there's something like "Meet the Greeks" next spring, but other than that, how do I acquaint myself with the different fraternities on campus? Thanks

Just talk to some of the fraternity guys you meet in class - go to a party or two (if they have open parties) - get involved in activities you like and you'll probably meet members there.

In addition to what 33girl suggested, check out the chapter's websites. You may get a feel for the chapter by what they publish and or highlight on their websites. And if you know any upperclassmen, and trust their judgment, ask them. Sometimes, the opinion of a sorority member or an independent may be spot on.

my mentor is in a sorority so I was going to ask her what fraternities she thinks I would enjoy and which ones she respects.

Not if you find the right fraternity.

auburn afrotc and greek life

as a current afrotc cadet at auburn university, from my experience there are only a small handful of cadets that are members of a fraternity, all but one freshman who rushed this year dropped. most of the problem is time. i was thinking about rushing, but there really wasn't the time of day for me. i wouldnt reccomend doing it unless you can get by with little sleep and have excellent time management skills. also in order to get one of the more competative jobs in the air force i.e. pilot the amount of involvement required for afrotc is higher and less compatible with greek life. also, the air force doesn't play at all when it comes to drinking. my advice is do one or the other, and if you want to be in both do the frat in college and apply to officer candidate school after you graduate.

i have two friends who are biological brothers, graduated from auburn and were involved in both afrotc and fraternities. the older brother was an engineering major on top of that! they managed very well, received their commission upon graduation, flew for the air force and now fly for delta(older brother) and american(younger brother).

check with the IFC at your college and see if they offer open houses. At my college there is open house in the fall and then we "coke date" where we take potentials out to dinner, lunch, dry bar parties untill rush. If there isn't open house then try going to their websites and contacting the recruitment chairs and let them know that you are interested in rushing and see what they have to say. Just by talking to the guys you will be able to tell a lot about the fraternity and if it is right for you. As far as not drinking I don't think it will be a problem unless you rush a party heavy fraternity. There are several guys in my fraternity that don't drink and still have plenty of fun, they still attend all of our socials and have a blast. If you are worried about finding the right fraternity don't worry it won't be hard once you start talking to the brothers. Also, don't let someone tell you that you should be in a certain fraternity, learn for yourself and go into with an open mind. You must decide where you belong and not your friends.

If you don't drink and a fraternity has a problem with that, it's probably not the right one for you. There are many out there that will both respect your wishes and not force you to do what doesn't feel right to you.

I agree with some of the above posters... visit the groups, go to a party or two, survey trusted friends... the only caution I have is to try and understand which personal biases may be present and why. Do your research, bro. Good luck.

A lot of chapters love guys who don't drink because there's always a need for designated drivers and sober monitors.

While drinking is not passe', it has become a major problem in some chapters and can be construde as hazing depending on how it is done.

If you do not drink, and some make fun of you, that is not the right group for you. Some may oh no, but if you feel presure, the same applies.

It sounds like a deffered recruitment and that way you can get to know members of different organizations and their members. When you feel comfortable with one group and they with you, then you may have found a home.

The very best of luck!
