rushing saturday!

So I'm rushing on saturday, kinda nervous! but I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help me out with.

1. Are flip flops approperiate for the first day since it's the most casual?

2. I'm a junior, I know I might be at a disadvantage, can I do anything that will make me stand out?

3. Can someone explain the process to me a little more, I'm a little confused. So the first night, you go to all of the houses, do they make their first cut then, so you might not go to all the houses again the next day?

4. If you go to pref night, lets say you are invited to 2 houses, since pref night is the last night before bid day, does that usually mean that you are getting a bid? Can you go to the pref night and still not get a bid on bid day?

5. Is bid day done infront of everyone? Meaning, do you personally get an invitation or gather somewhere and they will call your name if you got a bid?

I'm sorry I know that's a bunch of questions, anything will help!!

Most of these questions depend on the campus...

However, I will say NO FLIPFLOPS.

As AlphaFrog said, it depends on the campus, but GENERALLY SPEAKING:
1)kick it up a notch with some ballet flats rather than flip-flops
2)yes you will be at a disadvantage. Play up all of your positives. Try and connect with the people rushing you beyond name, major, hometown
3)yes, cuts are generally made the first day. usually for grades, but again, it depends on the campus
4)yes you can go to pref night and not recieve a bid on bid day.
5)it really depends, but usually you will be notified if you are not recieving a bid so that you don't show up and don't have one. Normally you get a paper invitation that states who you are getting the bid from.

But again, it all depends on the school.

Oh, and GOOD LUCK!

1. Are flip flops approperiate for the first day since it's the most casual? NO

2. I'm a junior, I know I might be at a disadvantage, can I do anything that will make me stand out? Talk about your involvement on campus, what you bring to the chapter in terms of leadership, etc.

3. Can someone explain the process to me a little more, I'm a little confused. So the first night, you go to all of the houses, do they make their first cut then, so you might not go to all the houses again the next day?

That is correct. At the end of each day you will list in order of preference those houses to which you want to return. The houses will make a similar list and if there is a match, you get an invite to the next round.

4. If you go to pref night, lets say you are invited to 2 houses, since pref night is the last night before bid day, does that usually mean that you are getting a bid? Can you go to the pref night and still not get a bid on bid day?

No, attending preference does not guarantee a bid, but it makes it extremely more likely. On most campuses, if you complete recruitment in good faith, you will get a bid.

Yes, it is possible for a PNM to attend preference parties and not get a bid, but for most campuses, very rare.

5. Is bid day done infront of everyone? Meaning, do you personally get an invitation or gather somewhere and they will call your name if you got a bid?

Usually they call you if you don't get a bid. Otherwise, you are told to meet in a specific location at a specific time to receive your invitation for membership

wow, thanks guys! that did help! However, here is something else I'm wondering about:

1. I'm classified as a junior, however, my minor is 30 hours, so I have 3 semesters to go ( if I push it) and if not, then 4 semesters, should I tell this to someone so they atleast know that I will not be done in 2 semesters or what not?

2. Since someone said something about cutting the first night due to grades, I have a little problem. My 2nd semester in college, I have a family member pass away ( this was in feb. 2004) I had to leave last minute and go overseas, I wasn't able to return quickly due to family and whatnot, I called the university I was attending, and they refused to drop my classes unless I was there in person, something I couldn't do, so they failed me in 3 classes and somehow got a C in my 4th class. This has dropped my GPA really down,( I"m still above 2.5, but I know it looks bad. looking at my transcript, my 1st semester is all A's and the 2nd one are all F's!! I feel like I need to tell this to someone so they don't think that I'm negligent when it comes to school, should I tell someone, and who?

It's up to you to try to explain your situation to the actives. Hopefully they will take these things into consideration.

Fair warning though, the grades issue might be hard overcome depending on the campus and the specific Chapter. Some may be able to give some flexibility especially considering your earlier grades, while some won't. Again it's up to you to explain. Unfortunately it's a little late but it could have been something that an alum could have helped explain in a rec.

P.S. My condolences over your loss. I'm surprised the University and/or your professors weren't more understanding and willing to work out a compromise over your grades. A death in the family isn't something that can be controlled and should entitle someone to a bit of leeway IMHO. That's really sad.

rush.

Thank you, I feel the need to explain it to someone but I really don't know who, maybe the Rho Gamma (I think that's what they are)? I feel so stressed out trying to make a good impression, and I don't want to leave a house and have them wonder about my grades, and like I said, I have about a 2.5. When I filled out the recruitment forms, they didn't ask for my transcript, are they able to view them somehow?

The Rho Gamma cannot help you in the situation. She has no contact with her sorority during recruitment, so telling her about your grades will not do any good as far as making your situation known. All she is can do is prepare you for possible outcomes.

It really depends on the school and each chapter. I don't know how it is at your school. Some chapters don't mind accepting juniors and other prefer sophmores and freshmen.

Ask the Greek Life office at your school this question as well.

Don't make a big deal about your junior status to the sororities. They'll all know your class standing. If someone asks, just say something like "Oh well I'm most likely going to be here another two years."

Unless your school has a separate upperclasswoman quota, you'll likely run into at least a couple chapters that will cut you for class standing alone. Try not to let it faze you.

The best advice I can give you is that given your class standing and your GPA struggles, keep a VERY OPEN MIND to all chapters on your campus. Some chapters will automatically cut anyone older than a freshman, some will cut anyone with a GPA below a 3.0, and some might cut both.

If you'd be happy to get a bid from any sorority on your campus, then you're setting yourself up for success. Good luck.
