A rec that is info-only will not hurt you in a West Coast recruitment situation. The rec itself is an informational form with details about your HS GPA/SAT scores and community/school activities. Sorority women, especially on the West Coast, understand that not everyone has personal access to members from all 26 NPC's!

Unless you are going to USC in Los Angeles, recs are going to be a rarity at best.

ETA: With my experience at UCLA, we never got many recs. It's surprising, given UCLA's national reputation for academics, but most of the students are Californians and first generation Americans. Recruitment is competitive, but the members tend to be more competitive within their academics than in focusing on recs or legacy pedigrees.

I think USC and UCLA are the two where it would help most. Other than that I don't think a rec is ever a negative.

Just remember that recs are not a free pass to a sorority. You are not guaranteed a bid because you have a rec, regardless of who may have written the rec on your behalf.

And if a chapter does not want upperclassmen, the rec is not going to make a difference.

Best of luck to you! If you can secure recs at all of the chapters, it will certainly elevate your name above the other PNMs coming in, especially if this is a campus that does not receive many recs.

But at the end of the day, your year in school and grades have much to do with early cuts, as well as your overall application (grades, activities, behaviors and the way you present yourself). Be a gracious guest at each sorority when you visit them, give them all a fair chance to wow you (just as you would want a fair shot at all of the sororities!) and have fun!
