Smile Transferring! Need clarity!

Hi! I am one confused girl. I have heard so many different stories and I need help finding out what I can do and cannot do:

As of right now, I attend a large university, however, I have to transfer to a smaller one that does not have my sorority. I do not want to transfer, but I have to because of family reasons and my dad, who pays my expensive sorority bill, was laid off. I have heard that I cannot join another one because I have been initiated which I understand and will abide by. On the other hand, I have heard if the school does not offer your sorority, you can go through again. I have also heard because of reasons that I cannot control, I can join another one. I would really appreciate someone to clear this up for me. And if I cannot join another sorority, how do I go about seeing if I can get a chapter to this small campus. Thanks so much!!

if you are an initiated member of a national panhellenic conference sorority, then you may not join another national panhellenic conference sorority-ever-for whatever reason. there are no exceptions.

upon transferring to your new school you will become an alumna of your sorority-you may need to do some paperwork to receive alumna status depending which npc sorority you are a member of.

i cannot speak for the nphc sororities or for local sororities.

Regarding bringing a chapter of your sorority to the new campus: this is a long process (read: it could take at least a year or longer) that must involve the University's office of Greek Life/Campus Panhellenic. If the campus is open for sorority expansion, it will solicit this intent to the NPC. Those organizations interested in colonizing will communicate with the university's Panhellenic and undergo an evaluation made by the campus Panhellenic.

Inquire if there is an alumnae association of your sorority in the city where you will next be attending school and get involved with this organization.

fsuzeta pretty much summed up your options.

If you are interested in bringing your sorority to your new campus (and it's an NPC sorority you're a member of), you'd have to find out if they're even interested in adding another sorority chapter on campus. Visit www.npcwomen.org for more information about Sorority Extension and Campus Expansion.

in order for you to assist in bringing a chapter of your sorority onto your new campus, that campus would have to be open for expansion. for npc sororities there is a certain protocol that must be followed, most of it handled thru the local collegiate panhellenic on the campus.

basically, the college panhellenic feels there is a need for a new sorority on campus and takes a vote on that. if the vote passes, the npc is notified and the npc makes a general announcement to all 26 member sororities that your new campus is open for expansion. all interested sororities send information packets to the college panhellenic. the college panhellenic reviews each packet and decides which sororities they will invite to make a campus visit at which time those sororities will give presentations. after the presentations are made the collegiate panhellenic will vote on which sorority to invite to colonize. sometimes they will extend invitations to more than one sorority at a time, with the stipulation that abc sorority will colonize in the fall of 2007 and def sorority will colonize in 2009. this gives the first colony time to become established before the other one comes on board.

Ah. I feel your pain. I am working on a second degree at a school that my organization no longer has a chapter. Sad. But, you will become an alum and you can do alum things. Check with your (inter)nationals and see where the closest alum chapter to you are. It is different yes, but it is still fun and you still get to do things with a close active chapter as well. Maybe even becoming an advisor to another chapter. I would definately check into it.
