Deactivate, give badge back?
If a member of your chapter resigns their membership, would you ask them for their badge back and send it to your headquarters? Does anyone have that kind of policy?

I am sure all GLO's require them to return the badges to IHQ but alot don't. I would not ever ask anyone to give up their badge because they paid for that badge. If IHQ would reimburse them for the badge they they should give it back.

We have that policy, however in my experience no one really ever gives it back.

Alpha Gamma Delta policy is that the badge is the property of the Fraternity and must be returned when the member is no longer in Good Standing or is deceased (Chapter Grand) unless the badge is buried with the member.

Our International Constitution says that if a member deactivates, the badge should be returned to HQs, but I've never had a member of my own chapter deactivate to know. If a new member quits during NME, they give their NM pin back as well.

Our policy states that the badge must be returned to the chapter, who then forwards it back to National Headquarters. Some girls are very good about turning their badges in when they should, and others have very bad attitudes about it. Usually the President is in charge of getting the badge back. When I was President, I had to take 2 badges, one voluntarily and one involuntarily. It's always sad, but it's usually the best thing for both the girl and the sorority.

Was never asked for my badge (goes along with the fact that no one spoke to me but I'll stop venting). It wouldn't have mattered though. It was on my whites that a sister had taken on her semester abroad to England. Haven't seen it in 4 years.

Kappa Delta requires the pin's return. It says so in our Norman Shield, which is the book we get when we're new members. I could quote it, but the book is in my car, and it's only 15 degrees outside, so I'm not going to get it. ^^ It says something like "The pin is like a lifelong loan. If you leave, you have to give it back." Only, not so blunt.

Like Lynn said, AGD requires that our badged be returned if we leave the chapter. However, in my 3 years with my chapter, I have seen a good sum of sisters deaffiliate and have only seen 2 badges actually returned.

Our national requires the badges to be returned as well. Our chapter usually keeps them though since it takes forever to get badges in. last year one member disaffiliated, she hadn't gotten her badge in yet but had borrowed another. she didn't leave on good terms so she never returned the loaned badge...and it had dangles on it so that sister is out a lot.
But usually the disaffiliates are glad to get rid of it....

Tri Sigma badges are property of the Sorority. You do pay for it, and you do keep possesion of it throughout your membership and lifetime. You can be buried with your badge after death, or it must be returned to HQ, your choice. If a members membership is terminated, then she must return her badge or new member pin.
The ownership of the badges is what is causing all of the issues with our badges being on ebay.

Yeah, you pay for your badge, but you don't own it. It's like renting an apartment. Just because I paid $710 this month doesn't mean I get to keep it forever! The landlord can kick me out for running a meth lab in it or keeping my neighbors up at night with loud parties. And when I die, I don't get to be buried in my apartment.
A badge is the same way. You rent it for your lifetime, and the possession of it is a privilege that can be taken away if you no longer deserve it or don't wish to be a part of the group any more. And when you die, it can't just be inherited by your relatives (unless, in most groups, you give it to a relative who is in the chapter).
Of course, I'm not running a meth lab!

Chi Omega, like the others, asks members to return their badge if they choose to leave the sorority or are kicked out for whatever reasons.
Personally this past semester I was having financial difficulties and my chapter's personnel chair was starting to talk about asking for my badge. It was rather disheartening when I'd spent 3 1/2 years in the house and was simply opting to pay bills than pay dues (which is a whole different topic).
Had they asked me to give back my badge I probably wouldn't have only because I've been a Chi Omega for so long and I wouldn't be leaving willingly. Now if I had simply quit of course I would have given it back - who wants a reminder of what you "quit"?!?!
Luckily for me everything worked out for the best and I went alum early because I moved...so now I have my badge and status in Chi Omega.
YEAH!

Badges. etc...
Kappa Alpha Theta requires that you return your badge, and they actually would prefer that you turn in ALL your Theta items, this includes sweatshirts and other logo greek lettered items. Most girls just give away all their Theta stuff. At my chapter, de-activating is a big deal, I've only seen it happen a few times in the past 4 years.
