Anyone ever been a UG advisor?
What are your thoughts? I just submitted an application but still have to get trained...

I think Soror D(Three_Love) was on the Advisor team for an ATL school....
Mainly I see that sorors need Love, Patience and energy as an advisor.
Hope you get the position and start the training... I feel it is a valuble experience.

Yep, on three different occasions. The biggest thing to remember is you can't be their soror buddy. On the other hand, you are not their mother, either. You have to find that balance. Also your role is to train them up in Delta--teach them how to do for themselves. Don't end up doing things for them. They should know how to read the tools, just like you do.
Lastly, your life will be consumed. Good luck and it is a good stepping stone.

I'm not a Delta, but Congratulations and good luck!
Eventhough I am not an advisor, merely an undergraduate, I agree with LG on the not being their soror buddy. I would love to read about experiences of those who have been advisors to their respective orgs. Advisors play an extremely important role in the eventual maturation of undergraduates!

That's exactly what I was thinking! I dont even just want to be the primary, I figured council at first, then 2ndary, then eventually primary. I want to gain as much experience in all aspects as I can!
I do have another question.. do you think their is certain experience one should already have? Also, do you think there should be a time frame in between the time one was an undergrad and being an advisor?
I crossed in 02, graduated in 03. I did my offices in UG (VP, Membership Chair, LOMC) but havent really served on a grad level yet. Honestly, I just really havent felt like there was a need for me because the grad chaps here are so huge and most of the committees are already established.

There is a mandated time frame (C&B) but you qualify.

I had a fantastic advisor in UG, she was the best. The one thing I loved about her was her "stern-ness" with how we got things done. She hated how some of us would hold off until the last minute and though she would assist us, she would make sure we felt the heat or suffered the consequence without if being malicious. When I was UG pres, she was my rock, there was nothing that Soror S.S. didn't assist me with. I know more about the workings of Delta thanks to her..and she is the reason I would love to be an UG advisor. I even when to training several months ago, but as I mentioned in another thread, I just feel that my area is shock full of trained advisors.

Maybe so, but just remember whose decision it is. Your availability might be what a chapter is looking for.

I was not on the advisory team, but I helped the sorors of Xi Alpha bring in their Spring '06 line. The sorors planned and ran everything, but the chapter was small at the time, so some SM-LAC sorors were trained and helped (and now they're big girl prophytes, LOL).
It seems to me that advisory teams/councils are the best route to me, because of the demands on the advisors and how an advisor is supposed to be at every event. It needs to be spread out...but that could cause problems if the advisory team is not "of one mind". I don't know if I would want to be an advisor though. Like ladygreek said - you can't be their "soror buddy" - it's like trying to be the "cool" parent, LOL.
Like, I went to a "coming out" show/NIP last night, and I was thinking, wow, where are the advisors? A lot of stuff seemed "not right"...I wouldn't want to be the one to have to shut stuff down, ya know?
It's a tough job...but somebody gotta do it. I'll stick with training...whenever I can get trained again, LOL.

And we are very, very glad that you all helped out! Everyone from SM-LAC that we met during our process, officially on the advisory team or not, was incredible to us.
