What was your reason?
Hello Sorors!
The question I pose is... In high school, did anyone have a made-up mind to pledge something else but finally found the Sigma light? If so, what were your reasons for choosing Sigma Gamma Rho?

Funny you should ask, SoRHOr...
The mark of a woman of true greatness is that she does not have to diminish the light of others to be seen.
If a woman is truly great, then she can acknowledge and rejoice in the greatness and achievements of others without feeling that her own beauty and virtues are in jeopardy. That's the power of true excellence. It means being selective without being discriminatory or oppressive. It means having goals and aspirations while keeping in mind that all of us are human beings with feelings and merit.
No one exhibited that power on my collegiate campus like the magnificent women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. That is why I am one today.

I was searchin but I was found
This may be a difficult question for some but not for me. I was raised to look at another sorority. I came to my campus searching for what I thought would make me a better person. However within that time. I began to realize who I really was and that person could never be a part of that sorority. So after my search had ended, I had realized that I had been found even when I was not trying to be. I have to admit that I did not know if I was ready. The experience that I was about to embark apon was a once in a lifetime experience. Once I was a part of the experience I was truly happy to be found by the right sorority. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Remember it is not about the quantity but about the QUALITY.

Hi Soror and welcome to GC. This question has been posted before in a different way but I don't mind answering it again. When I love something as much as I love Sigma Gamma Rho I never get tired of speaking about it... thanks TRS for your lovely words.
I'll be back later with my reason.
Poodles.

Before attending college I had never heard about Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated. I had only heard about two other sororities and what I heard I did not like. When I was in high school I decided that I didn't want to be a part of any sorority because the two that I knew about were not for me. I thought they were cliques and I didn't need to be a part of that clique. During my freshman year I met two lovely young ladies that accepted me just because and they treated me like a little sister before they even knew me. They accepted me for me. They encouraged me to do my research and actually helped me find out more about other sororities and what a sorority actually was. The diversity within Sigma is what ultimately attracted me to this sorority. They were unique in every way. During my freshman year I went to different schools and to different parties and the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho, just represented on the campus. Like a previous soror said before it's not quantity but quality and the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho are definitely the cream of the crop. Everyone can't be a sophisticated lady of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated. I know this was a bit long winded but I could talk forever about Sigma. I could not have made a better decision in my life.

SoRHOrs,
Ladies you said it so well! I knew from a very young age that there were four sororities, however, I just knew in my heart from the age of about 16 that I wanted to be a Sigma woman. Every Sigma I met, whether in a formal or informal setting, always carried herself in such a postive and classy manner. When I began to check and read about the history of Sigma Gamma Rho how she overcame true racism and adversity to help out people of color. I knew that I wanted to be a Sigma Gamma Rho!
Great Question Soror!

my reason...
I'll try to keep it short and sweet...
Basically what turned me on to Sigma Gamma Rho was something one of my (now) sorors said in an interest meeting. Her words were:
"Sigma Gamma Rho is not begging anyone to become a member. We are doing fine by ourselves. We are small, but we ALL do the work. I'm not going to sit here and tell you what to do. I want you to make an educated decision. Look at everybody! We'll call you when we get together and you're welcome to do things with us. We're not pressuring you at all. Even if you decide to join another sorority, you're still welcome to hang out with us."
This is what made me want to be a Sigma Gamma Rho. The ladies weren't lecturing me about how great the sorority is and a list of accomplishments, but they were showing me their sisterhood, scholarship, and service by their personalities and sincerity. No stereotype. No pressure. I could be me! I wanted something to accentuate who I already was, not to become something else. I'm a great person all by myself! That's why chose that RHOyal Blue & Antique Gold... EEEEEE-YIP!!!
... dang, that wasn't "short & sweet"... well, it just wasn't short.

OK, now.
Well said, Soror! Who was the Soror you quoted from the interest meeting? That is how I feel about Sigma.
When I first went to college I didn't even know what a sorority was. There were no black greek letters at my college but I did hear certain young ladies speak about two and their interests in a nearby chapter. I transferred to another school to come back home to DC and there I found the two sororities they spoke of on that campus. While I was there I became very interested but I was a senior. I graduated, started working, got married, had children and forgot about a sorority but knew it was something that I always wanted to do. A few years ago I started researching all 4. I fell in love with our history and I know at this point in my life I made a grown up decision. I know that I am committed for life.

I always loved blue and gold. And I had family in the org. All of her sisters that I met were very together women. One of the best decisions I've ever made!

my reasons:
I was in AWE of the history and legacy of Sigma
the women I encountered who were my sisters even before they were my sorors- esp Soror Degraffenreid, she was the president of the chapter and a senior when I was a freshman (she actually celebrates her 6 year Sigmaversary today )
the creativity and tenacity of the chapter on my campus
the national and local service initiatives which the chapter implemented and represented
the diversity: the fact that the sisterhood was comprised of women of all backgrounds, colors, shapes, interests, etc.
the fact that the sorority was founded and focuses on education and serving our communities
the ability to take on the Name and traditions of what I call Tribe Sigma
the way Sigma Gamma Rho women carry themselves
and make a mark

short and sweet...
beyond everything great about SIGMA as a sorority, there was one, all so important thing that made me KNOW that SIGMA GAMMA RHO was for me:
the women of SIGMA were just so REAL. they were DOWN TO EARTH. they weren't trying to be anything that they weren't and laid the cards on the table for me and let ME decide--no pressure, no downplaying other organizations, and they showed me lots of love UP FRONT--i was treated sisterly way before i was a soror--and that sealed the deal for me.

Great examples!!!
My mother and aunt are soRHOrs and they always said positive things about their college days in their chapter (Alpha Lambda, '62 for both). And my cousin had good experiences too in the same chapter (Alpha Lambda, '87). So, I decided to join (Lambda Lambda, '88).
The clincher for me occurred before I joined. I caught a glimpse of my cousin and mom greeting each other with the official handshake. I wanted to do that too!!!
Oh, and I liked the colors too.
