What bugs me is that I guess Europe has been criticizing the film as "Pro-Bush in Iraq" I mean seriously, is EVERYTHING an allegory these days? I'm going to have to make another trip to the IMAX sometime later when I can maybe actually get a ticket
K & agree.

Saw it tonight with the boyfriend. It wasn't as violent as I expected (I thought Gladiator was more violent), but maybe that's because the art direction of it makes the battle scenes seem a little surreal. I wasn't really drawn into the characters at all...UNLESS you count all the HOT mostly naked men with God-like bodies! That made the movie for me.

My boyfriend & I went to see 300 this past Friday, and we both enjoyed it for its visual effects. The movie is certainly entertaining.

I loved it. I'm a Classical major and it was great to see the things I study everyday on the big screen. And PS, the actor who played Leonidas was hot!

Ditto on that. As well as the one who kept grinning at the idea of a great death I'm a sucker for sweaty Spartans...

Can't movies just be entertainment anymore???

Iranians outraged over hit movie ‘300’
Blockbuster depicting Persian siege called an ‘obvious insult’
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17599641/?GT1=9145

Why is everything an insult to everyone? It's a movie...they are for distraction and entertainment value. Some folks are always trying to make more out of things than what is really there.

Get over it.

The 700+ Thespians were at the last stand, when they knew that the Persians had encircled them. According to Herodotus, there were about 6000-7000 Greeks (his term) in the initial stage of the battle -- the 300 Spartans and the 700 Thespians, plus Arcadians, Corinthians, Thebans, Phocians and others. The Phocians, who were supposed to be guarding the "goat path," as they call it in the movie, were apparently taken by surprise and were routed or killed, and the Thebans were taken hostage. Most of the other Greeks retreated, but the Thespians remained with the Spartans to the end.

Although I certainly don't expect but so much historical accuracy to get in the way of telling a good Hollywood story, the friend I saw it with and I were surprised by two historical/established lore omissions or changes in the story. We thought it was odd that Leonidas was depicted as the king rather than as one of Sparta's two kings. Sparta had a dual kingship.

Also, we were surprised that the oracle was altered. According to Herodotus, Sparta consulted the oracle at Delphi (not a local oracle), which gave this prophecy:

O ye men who dwell in the streets of broad Lacedaemon!
Either your glorious town shall be sacked by the children of Perseus,
Or, in exchange, must all through the whole Laconian country
Mourn for the loss of a king, descendant of great Heracles.
He cannot be withstood by the courage of bulls nor of lions,
Strive as they may; he is mighty as Jove; there is naught that shall stay him,
Till he have got for his prey your king, or your glorious city.

In other words, either one of the kings had to die in battle defending Sparta, or Sparta itself would fall. Leonidas, then, went to Thermopylae not in spite of the oracle, but to fulfill the oracle's prophecy.

It think this is funny. How many Americans actually know that Iran was once part of Persian empire? Not many unless they really like history. I would have to say not ever 50% would know.

I have to say I was impressed. I only went because my friend dragged me - I had no desire to see it. But it rocked. Great movie.

Oye... stop the madness... it's a MOVIE.

Saw 300 last night & loved it. I'm normally not a fan of this 'type' of movie (I'm more of a chick flick kinda gal ) but I really liked it... it wasn't as gory as some other movies like Braveheart or Gladiator. I think the technology they used to make the film also made it a bit less yucky (the blood in most of the battle scenes, for example, looked like mud and not red gooey blood if that makes any sense)

The hunky Spartans also made the movie easier to watch

My favorite line of course was "Then we shall have to fight in the shade"... and I loved when the arrows started coming one of the Spartans started giggling about the shade coming... that was nice! haha

I did notice more women in the movie than I expected. And more women seemed to give it a thumbs up also.

The women I met that hated it, hadn't even watched it.

I was reading an EW article about the movie and they mentioned they'd been ignoring the female audience because it was clearly a guy's movie. Then they got a 100% favorable response from women under 25 in a test audience. Queen Gorgo's plot was already there but I think they made her even cooler after that (except for her name sadly )

Saw it in the IMAX yesterday. Totally worth it!
I'm reading Gates of Fire now and loving it!

no way! they do a great job of making him look more ethnic-y if that's the case. when his character was introduced with that weird synnthetic voice and the ridiculous height, the whole theater errupted in laughter. it was too much foolishness for one to absorb! if xerxes isn't gy, I'll eat my hat. he kept talking about wanting people "on their knees" lol, it was just such a running joke for the rest of the movie!
