This is the worst one I've ever heard.

I had a professor back in the day who was really ignorant and tried to feign intelligence by using "big" words. He always spoke to students in a condescending manner and acted superior. I kid you not, whenever he wanted someone to elaborate on an answer, he said "Please explicicate" and "Exlpicicate on that"! He said this at least three times per day. I can only assume he meant to say "explicate," and he could have just said "explain". Nothing makes someone sound dumber than desperately trying to sound smart. I swear I don't know where these people get Ph.Ds!

*Looking Around* Wow,I haven't been here in a while. But anyway...

You know, I've been enjoying my college life so far, and I enjoy most of my classes, but I was and still am amazed at the number of professors that can't speak correct english. I know of three that can't pronounce words correctly. My old world civilization teacher has the hardest time saying "Current Affairs". It always comes out "Current Affers". I don't know if it's that's the way he was spoken to as a child or what, but he has a hard time saying words with "air" in them. I know a lot of people that say "saushish" too instead of "sausage".

LOL! Most of my family is from that area (Boston,Lowell) and they talk exactly like that. Especially my mother and grandmother. They both say "Cah" for "Car" and "Gahbage" for "Garbage".

Okay. West Tennessee words here- Courtesy from my mom, neighbors and other Ebonic speaking elders.

1. Coatin- Courting
2. Cuttin- Cousin- Mom my is bad with this, " You know Cuttin Isa so- and s0
3. "Walla go"- awhile a go
4. "Wallin in the floor"- waddle
5. "Get round waif from heah"- Get away from here
5. Raute- Route
6. "progering" - Probing- I found out in 2006 that was not a word.
7. "Molly"- That is so nasty and "molly"- I don't know what "molly" english correct word is. I know what it means though! lol
8. "I be"- " Well I be dog gone, he done ate all of the candy"
9. Swill chair- wheel chair
10. weep- sweep

Okay my mother told me the other day that she had to take my neice to her "Recycle" I was like, huh?! And I starting laughing and she did too, she was like " Okay, what is it? I was like Recital!!! My mom is a trip. I have a theory though about our pronunciations. I do think a lot of comes from learned speech patterns from our African ancestors. I know for a fact that the verb "to be" is omitted from various West African languages. We always omit it now, like "He so crazy" etc. I don't think it is a negative thing. I can code switch like a mug!

my mama cool..she be like scrimp...and screet...instead of just plain "r"..she be like " r-uh"..lol..my uncle says manilla instead of vanilla and bissy instead of biscuit..haha..they cool tho!

My aunt says "heeyah": which means "stop"

It grinds my gears when someone talks about "I want to LOOSE weight" (or something like that)

That is so funny. My mom is from Memphis and I have to really try to understand what my cousins are saying. For example the word "HER" - pronounced HER, could mean here, her or hair. DUR - means Dear, it is so funny. . and even though my mom has been gone fora minute when we go back she slips up every time!
