Sept. 11 ~ Patriot's Day

I just heard on the news that President Bush made an order that September 11th be Patriot's Day in remembrance of September 11, 2001. Each year though the President will have to proclaim (or something) that day as a Holiday.

How do you all feel about that becoming a national holiday?

I think it is an important day in American history that non of us will ever forget, whether or not it is proclaimed as a National Holiday...I think it's a great way to pay homage (sp.) to those that perished in this tragedy...

However, for those that did lose someone close to them as a result of the Sept. 11th tragedy, it will be a constant reminder for them every year that the one they loved is gone...But then, again, they will probably remember it anyway w/out the holiday...That date is stuck in all of our minds forever....

For anyone that lost someone close to them on Sept. 11th, I'm curious to know what you think of this???

I think I see your point, Ideal08.

The lives lost at Pearl Harbor and during other national conflicts are commemorated on Nov. 11th (Vetrans Day). However, I think the push to have a special day to recognize Sept. 11th is because it mainly affected civilians and public service (firefighters/ police/ ems) officials, not military vetrans.

What about those who lost their lives in Oklahoma? Was there a national holiday of recognition in their honor?
And supposedly, this was done "within our own country"by a "good ole boy".

What about the church bombing in Alabama in the 60's? Is there a national holiday recognized for this loss?

What about the countless others whose lives have been lost?

Just asking...

i can see everyone's point, i think making it a holiday is not necessary, but if that is their desire hey go for it, as long as i get paid. anyway i think they should include all events that have taken the lives of others due to terrorism domestic or foriegn

You Know What?? This is why I love GC...B/c everyone can voice their opinion (well, most people) w/out attitudes or all that "other " mess...

You all have swayed me to your side of the fence...You're right: It's not fair to celebrate this just b/c it was an act of foreign terrorism, when acts of dmostic terrorism occur in our country more often yet go unrecognized (no Holidays for them)...

So, I'm choosing to agree w/ Positively...Either make the Holiday for all, or don't make one at all...

Also, mayb they should pick a "neutral" day out of the year to celebrate ALL lives lost to domestic AND foreign terrorism...Just a thought...

One day late last week on the news it was mentioned that possibly $300,000 to $1.5 or 1.6 million dollars would be given to those families who lost someone during 9-11. The amount would be determined by the number of family members left, the future earning potential of the lost family member, etc.

How do you feel about this?

My question is, will EVERYONE who lost someone get something? Will those janitors, maintenance personnel, secretaries, elevator operators' families get a piece of the pie, too?

Or, will those who receive anything come from the Fortune 500 company's personnel, those WHITE collar workers?

If they are using future earning potential as one yardstick for compensation, it is highly likely that the Fortune 500-style, white-collar workers would definitely make out better than the secretaries, janitors, et al.

I watched 60 minutes last night and this morning I watched a special on the 9/11 events on A&E. I thought some of Dubuya's comments were interesting and I got the sense that he stepped out of his political box when reflecting on his feelings. The A&E show was very moving and poignant. It made me miss my hometown even more!!

It helped me to reflect and put my life in better perspective. That was such a sad day and I still feel such a sense of loss. I used to see the World Trade Center from my house in Brooklyn. I would love to look at it especially during the 4th of July when you can see all of the fireworks.

When I went to visit more frequently I remember being more excited about 'going home' when I saw those towers as the bus traversed toward the Lincoln Tunnel.

AKA2D--I looked at some of the things you said 2 years ago and I think you are right. We should look at all of the incidents where civilian lost their lives due to the ignorance of others. Hopefully there can be a day where those people are remembered specifically and perhaps 9/11 would be the catalyst to make it happen. My only fear is that we as a society will become too complacent and cheapen the importance of remembering these events.

These horrific events 9/11, Pearl Harbor, Oklahoma etc are what have defined this country and its history. I feel that it is important that we NEVER forget them. Understand the significance, the purpose (good and bad), see how those events have impacted this country today and how individually we can work to change things and if need be make us a better society for ourselves and our children.

Just my .10cents worth.

Good point. Give it a few years and retailers will be having a "9/11 shoe sale".

Sounds crazey, but I am sure that Veterans didn't imagine that happening to their day of remeberance either.
