APO's President Carries Olympic Flame

On 4 December 2001, Alpha Phi Omega's national president, Jack McKenzie carried the Olympic flame as it passed through Clemson, South Carolina on its journey to the Winter Olympic site in Salt Lake City, Utah. This once-in-a-lifetime event was a great honor for our national president. GO APO!!!!!!!!! For full story and picture, click

"Our Fraternity will continue to offer America what it most needs -- future leaders who care, who want to become part of the solution, who know they can make a difference, and who realize that service to others is a value worth sharing."

Gerald A Schroeder, Past National President, 1990-1994

I MET HIM!!! No lie!! He passed the flame to a ZTA alumna from Brenau University, whose daughter is a recent ZTA alumna from Clemson University. I heard all about Jack McKenzie and how a student nominated him. The onlookers had soo many wonderful things to say about him, and plenty of time to say it - the flame was nearly an hour and a half late. I took a picture with the ZTA alumna, her daughter, and a few of my sisters. We also hope to send it to our national magazine for a great story like y'all's.

Mrs. Abercrombie, the ZTA alumna, has been battling melanoma and was an absolutely radiant torch bearer. It was great to meet Mr. McKenzie, as well, and hear so many great things about an APO alumnus. I was wondering why so many APO's were there wearing their letters - I didn't even think to ask!!

It was such a memorable experience for me and everyone else there! So congratulations, APO and ZTA!!

DAMN Browneyedgirl, you met him!! Sweet! I have yet to shake the mans hand, now that he is a "national celebrity" as he is already a celebrity amongst our bretheren. I hope to do so at the next year's National Convention in New Orleans. Cool story!!

I know, I'm so excited!! I didn't realize what a 'celebrity' he was or even that he was an APO alumnus, much less *national president*. All of the Clemson locals there (particularly and older couple who stood near me) had GREAT things to say about him, and I can see why. There were a number of locals (not including students!) standing there just to cheer him on. I was so excited about OUR alumna that I didn't even think to ask any more about him. I almost didn't even read your post, but I'm so glad I did! Who knew? Thanks for sharing your story!!

You're very welcome!!!

Your're welcome, BrownEyedGirl, I will ALWAYS spread the good word about my beloved Fraternity! It's very cool that you were on hand to bear witness to such a historic event.

I read in the latest issue of the Sphinx that a Phi Sigma Sigma is carrying/carried the torch at some point, now if I had the issue with me, I could tell you who, when and where... but alas, I dont have it with me. But congrats to all of the orgs represented in the torch carrying, such an honor! Go Greeks!
