How did you know when you were ready to get married?

How did you know when you were ready to get married? Some of my friends have started discussing this lately.

When I was 6, my best friend Bryan, who lived across the street from me, asked me to marry him. It seemed like a good idea at the time, so I went in my jewelry box and got my She-Ra ring, and a pretty plastic purple jewel ring that I won in a gumball machine. His older sister married us on my front lawn. We had plans to live in my playhouse, but 6:00 rolled around, and we both had to go in for dinner. Nothing much was said about our marriage from that point on, I think the next day we started an involved game of freeze tag or something.

Sorry Wine&Silver...I've never really been proposed to, but I wanted to reply to your thread because no one else has.

i knew i was ready when the thought of spending time without him or with somebody else was physically painful to me and waking up with him every morning was exactly what i wanted to do for the rest of my life...

Barf.

We eloped and then did a (little bit) bigger wedding thing later. It was great.

So you knew you were ready to get married because you eloped? LOLZ. Imagine if you eloped and were like SHIT! I'M NOT READY!

Oh hell, my husband and I still have a running joke that we shouldn't have gone to Georgia that day. I don't remember what the actual turning point when we decided to get married was. I think maybe it was when we figured out that he had more clothes and personal effects at my apartment then he did at his.

I couldn't see being with anyone else. He bought the ring about a year after we met and waited another 6 months to propose. He'd done the whole dating scene after college and was ready to settle down. I'd graduated from college and was ready to be more of an "adult." (Though, after almost three years of marrige and now a baby, I still don't feel like more of an adult.)

I knew I was ready to marry my soon-to-be husband because I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, and that I could put up with even his most obnoxious habits in the long term.

When my father told me that he didn't like my boyfriend, I knew it was time the boyfriend and I got married.

I had to come home from college for a semester to help with family stuff and I couldnt stop thinking about him. He was a wreck all the time and came home every weekend I couldnt come up to see him.

We just couldnt bare to be apart and we both knew each other was the one. Being away from each other showed how much we missed each other and couldnt see being with someone else.

When I came back to college we just knew it was right and a year later he proposed. We both were poor college students and he wanted to save to buy a ring.

I think we still would have gotten married if I didnt go home for a semester, but that semester really showed us what it was like to not have the other in your life all the time. We took for granted being able to see each other anytime when we were together and being apart showed us what we meant to each other.

I knew being home that he was the only person for me and I hope he felt the same because I couldnt imagine not being together forever.

The plane tixs were too expensive for a long distance relationship... So, I asked him how serious he was with me and told him I'm too old to be waitin' 6 months if all "this is" is a fling...

Never thought he'd actually propose, then we'd get into a fight and then he'd fill out the paperwork for the marriage license...

I realized what I had chosen to do after I actually saw the ring I designed from the jeweler and the judge said, "WOW, nice ring" and we said "I do..."

As weird as it sounds, I feel like he's the male version of myself. We both have the same or similar personality quirks, we both have the same downfalls, similar things that make us happy... and of course the patience to live with each others ups and downs because we both do the same thing to each other. (Yeah... if that makes sense...)

And he's shown more empathy and general concern about my health than any other person besides my parents... so that's a big plus.

We had lived together for a couple of years and were in love. I had always thought I wanted to be a bachelor for a long time, but I started thinking seriously about marriage. At that point, I realized I wanted to propose to her.
