IN A TORNADO? If you're outside and a tornado comes it can throw you into anything and anything can be thrown into you. If you're in the basement or the lowest level of a house or building, you won't be protected 100% but it sounds safer than being outside.

There are very few basements in OK. The reason is that the bedrock is below an average of almost 20 feet of thick clay. People die mostly in tornados when they are crushed by their house. People who get picked up in tornados usually have anything from broken bones to severe injuries, but they usually live.

Besides, being inside doesn't guarantee that you won't be picked up. People in Chickasas in the May 1999 tornados got picked up with their house (not a trailer home.)

Tornados are serious, but they are a part of one of my favorite jokes:

Q. What do a tornado and a hillbilly divorce have in common?

A. Sooner or later some poor guy is going to lose his trailer.
