help me pick out a dress!

ok...I've got a big time wedding coming up. It will be the first time I meet most of the bf's friends who live out of town. The wedding will be the first weekend of April in Spartanburg, SC...7 PM. I can't find anything to wear in my closet so it is the perfect excuse to buy a kick tail dress! The problem is that since it is the first weekend in april (before Easter), in a place I don't know anything about, and a formal (I assume) night time wedding, I can't find a dress and wrap! Some one help me out please! I went to Ann Taylor this weekend, most of their dresses are on a white background (is that ok before Easter?) and sleeveless and the wraps they have are the belero (sp?) types. J Crew has some cute cocktail type dresses...Nordstroms has some cute ones also. Has anyone seen anything else? Any suggestions? All help is appreciated!

Have you checked out Ann Taylor's website? They have a lot of dresses in several different colors. I believe its called the Celebrations collection. I wish I had somewhere to go so I could buy one of these dresses - they are so cute.

one of my friends just got one the j crew dresses for her boyfriend's friend's wedding. it's really cute. she got it in black for an evening wedding.

A lot of their other dresses are cute too.

Every once in awhile I've found cute cocktail dresses at Macy's (they often have good sales, as well). I also like bloomies for dresses. (This is in addition to nordstrom of course, although I've found that nordstrom doesn't always have the best dress selection in their stores).

the ones i looked at were Ann Taylor in the store. I do have a dress coming that I ordered from J Crew in the special section but it was for my cousins wedding and is a bright pink, too springy for this early of a wedding. The one i really liked in the store was a strapless black with small small white polka dots and a shurg to wear over top...this was before I found out that it was a 7 PM wedding. The bride says that it is not a formal event but 7 has always meant formal to me. I will check there during my planning.

The average high for the first weekend in April in Spartanburg is lower 70's, so I think something sort of Spring-ish wouldn't be completely out of place.

Side note: As your coming down I-85 (if that's the way you're going) watch for the town of Gaffney. They have an interesting landmark there. It's supposed to be a giant peach, but it looks more like someone mooning you w/a hemmroid.

If the bride says it's not formal then don't be too formal. It's better to be a little overdressed, but not a lot. Nordstrom.com is always a good place to check too.

I always prefer to be slightly over dressed than underdressed
An evening wedding= a formal dress.
you could always pack two outfits for the weekend, and find out what the others are wearing.

The ann Taylor dress is supposed to be in Ivory.
I usually shy away from white at a wedding... I like the Jcrew dress... it is definately a dress that you must have the shape for.

the j.crew dress is sharp, but a little hoochie mama for an evening wedding. the ann taylor dress is pretty-i think i saw it in the local store and it is ivory-for a wrap, how about a shrug or a pashima shawl?

yeah, the ivory part was the thing i was worried about because of the fact that it is ivory and because it was so early in the season. anyone see anything else on these websites that is suitable?

as for a wrap, i think i am going to order the black chasmear (sp) one in j crew

Unfortunately, a lot of the new, really gorgeous dresses out now are too Springy for what you're going for. Some of the basic dresses that those stores have would be entirely appropriate though, and you could get some killer accessories to make things more interesting.
I always love this cut, and it's pretty universally flattering:
