Axe aims to 'pimp fraternity showers'

Body spray, shower gel company will give one shower a $15,000 makeover

By Garrett McCulloch
October 12, 2005
A UW fraternity could turn its bathroom shower's grime to gold -- and maybe mirrored walls.
A contest sponsored by Axe Shower Gel -- a company with a reputation of innuendo -- will select one fraternity shower somewhere in the country for a $15,000 upgrade. Participating showers will be judged entirely on their levels of filth via a public Internet vote.
"I really don't know what to think about that," said Brett Neilson, president of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Neilson said while he wouldn't have a problem with one of his fraternity's members signing one of the house's showers up for the contest, he doesn't think a chapter-wide signup is worth the fraternity's time.
Brooke Zeller, a spokesperson for the contest, said members of UW fraternities have already sent in entries.
To enter the contest, a fraternity member must submit a photograph of the house's grimy shower and a short essay describing why it should be "pimped."
According to an Axe press release, the winning shower will see improvements such as fold-down seats, support handles, adhesive grips, waterproof MP3 players and mirrors. The release promises that the "pimped-out" shower will be "a new place to entertain ladies." The winning fraternity will also get to host a "steamy" party with the "Axe Angels."
Neilson said his fraternity likely wouldn't even approach the winners, adding that Pi Kappa Alpha's members clean the house's showers on a regular basis, and the dirty fraternity stereotypes don't help the Greek community improve its image.
"If this is targeted at fraternities and their stereotypical filth, I don't think that helps the Greek system at all," he said.
Delta Upsilon president Nick Walker agreed, saying parts of the contest take away from more positive fraternity events.
"It's just one more thing in the press, when we're trying to concentrate more on things like philanthropy," he said.
Entries will be accepted until Oct. 28 through the contest's Web site, www.pimpmyfraternityshower.com. Voting will take place between Nov. 1-14.

That Axe crap is nasty, if a dude is showering with it that's the last place I can imagine any girl would want to be.

How true..and it's so IICCCKKKK...one of my little darlings in 8th grade thought it was "cute" to spray some in my class.

Had to turn on air, open all windows and door to get it out of the room! 15 minutes and 3 choking students later, it was gone.
HACK HACK HACK

Locally, an AXE commerical was played aobut a guy hiding under the bed with his g/f and her best friend and the father just got home...it was SO pulled off b/c the station is a "family friendly station".

Oh hell yes. The showers at my shelter were always kept very clean, but the shower room built during my shelter's expansion several years ago suffers from poor arcitechture and shoddy construction. We've spent considerable amounts of money to fix it only to have the same problems develop once again. $15k would definately do the trick. However, I know that we won't be subjecting ourselves to this. My fraternity brothers will still get a kick out of this.

Axe is one of the most vile smelling substances. A few years ago when they were handing out samples to all the fraternities on campus, house was not blessed (cursed) with but one case of 1oz samples, but two. A dozen or so for each man in the house. They did provide lots of entertainment over the course of a semester.

Think about the contest though, if your house wins then you get a $15,000 shower renovation. Now that sounds like an opportunity you wouldn't want to pass up. However, you will probably also be making national headlines which most people want to avoid. I also don't like the fact that they are trying to use sex to sell this contest, and are assuming that any fraternity would simply die at the opportunity to enter. Does anyone else see the opportunity for the winner of this contest to create a positive change for the Greek community?

Ya know, thirty years ago things like Axe had another name. It was called...aerosol DEODORANT! That stuff had the advantage that it didn't smell as nasty as Axe, but it did deplete the Ozone Layer....

It's stupid to give a chapter a $15,000 shower remodel, when the rest of your bathroom looks like ass...

Sigma Chi Does Not Support AXE Contest

It has come to our attention that the Unilever Company, makers of AXE male grooming products, is conducting a contest targeting fraternities. The purpose of this contest is to create an environment that would condone alcohol consumption and group sexual activity. The “AXE Pimp My Fraternity Shower Contest” is inconsistent with the values and mission of our Fraternity. Remember, it is not your character alone that will be stained with dishonor, it will rest upon us all. At no time should our Greek letters and insignia be used in a manner that would reflect negatively on the organization.

OU fraternity's rest room bowls over competition

By Chris Schutz
The Oklahoman

NORMAN -- Up for a party at the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity house at OU?

Head to the second-floor communal rest room. Make a right past the urinals. You can't miss it.

Huh?

Until a few days ago, the room was hardly the highlight of the University of Oklahoma fraternity house, which has been around since 1929. Urinals, sinks, one toilet in a stall, the other out in the open.

The curtainless shower room, used by 20 of the 63 residents of the house, was a collage of grime, mold and soap scum.

Girls stayed far away, fraternity President Tyler Merchant said. "They refused to walk through here," he said.

Then, the fraternity brothers heard about a chance to win a $15,000 fraternity shower makeover from AXE, a maker of men's grooming products.

In an Internet promotion of its "Pimp My Fraternity Shower" contest, AXE said, "We're going to give you a chance to win a shower that'll double as a place to entertain."

The Lambda Chis' habit of just saying "no" to cleaning was about to pay off.

One fraternity brother shot a photo of the shower in its natural state to enter in the contest, modeled after MTV's "Pimp My Ride" car makeover show.

There were rumors that someone took a mold sample from the Lambda Chi shower, cultured it and sent it in as part of the entry, Merchant said.

"That would have definitely helped our chances," Merchant said.

Mold sample or not, the fraternity racked up 6,000 e-mail votes to take first place in the contest, according to AXE.

It was a bowl victory (of the porcelain kind) over Oregon State University's Delta Chi fraternity, the runner-up.

Friends and relatives of Lambda Chi members were asked to help with the cause. "We had everyone with e-mail vote every day," said Merchant, an accounting major from New Mexico.

Entering the contest started out as a joke, said Trey Parham, a sophomore zoology major. When the Lambda Chis found out they were in the top 10, "everyone started getting really excited," he said.

When the fraternity brothers start moving back before classes start on Tuesday, they may not recognize the rest room, which is one of four in the house.

The room is now adorned in the fraternity colors of purple and green with its Greek letters in gold.

The shower room has been divided in half with actual curtains and now has multiple shower heads. There's room for "two guys and six girls," Parham said.

The shower has a new sound system, hand rails and custom-made teak seating and cupholders to give it a sauna look.

Non-slip matting covers the rest room floor, and there are new partitions around the toilets. A set of cubbyholes gives the guys a place to store their shower products.

The guys missed out on one of the possible contest prizes a plasma television because the room was not large enough.

Now that the room is all spiffed up, how often will it get cleaned?

"Hopefully, it will go in cycles," Parham said.

The project has intrigued the members' female friends, Parham said. "All the girls really want to stop by," he said.

Merchant envisions one big advantage from the makeover. "It will be great during rush, for sure."
