Sincere Intentions or Other Motives:White GOPer Denied Membership w/ TN Black Caucus

White GOPer Charges Racism at Tenn. Black Caucus
Saturday, October 08, 2005

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Rep. Stacy Campfield may seem an unlikely candidate for his state's black caucus (search). But the white Republican said he wants to join the group to serve a segment of his constituency better.

But Campfield's membership to the caucus was rejected and the state representative says it's because of the color of his skin.

"Only blacks can become full members — full and equal members," Campfield said. "I think that's the definition of racism."

Click on the video box on the right to view a report by FOX News' Jonathan Serrie.

The chairman of the caucus, Johnny Shaw, says at first he dismissed Campfield's request as a joke. Now, however, he thinks Campfield has other motives.

"I think the issue is money. He probably wants to know how we spend our money," Shaw said.

Shaw pointed out that the caucus meetings are open to anyone, and that the group offers honorary memberships.

But he has not changed his initial decision to deny Campfield a full membership.

If his motive to better serve parts of his constituency was sincere, he would have just accepted honorary membership and moved on. But by publicizing this and yelling racism, I think shows that he has something more sinister in mind.

And boo Columbus Day.

LOL. What? Now you know Columbus didn't "steal" this country from anybody, he "found" it. *sound familiar*?

Who knew that after all these years, people would still try to use that excuse. LOL

This guy definitely wasn't interested in joining for the right reasons. If he truly wanted to better serve a part of his constituency, he had other means to do so. He knew he wasn't getting in. He just wanted to cry "reverse racism" (I hate this phrase ).

Exactly. There was an article in our paper yesterday, about a White teacher telling the real story to her high school history class (that was mostly of color.) Needless to say, she ruffled a few feathers. But she wouldn't back down. LOL

This is the type of stuff that really gets me upset. Everyone knows the Republican position on Affirmative Actiona and how they have come up with this farse of "reverse racism", as if that could really happen in THIS country with IT's demographics, history and power structure. Ever since the Grutter case (the Michigan Law School case decided by the Sup. Ct. in 2001) came down, repubs have been aching to try to identify situations of what they call reverse racism to make their point. It's rediculous.

I think they should have let him in. After he saw what the organization was actually about and the issues they seek to address and after he, AS A MEMBER, would have been called on to aid in those initiatives, I bet he would have quickly become, what we in the GLOs call "an inactive member". Dude knows he would not have been out there trying to secure additional funds for education, programs designed to assist inner city youth and parents, increased access to health care, community development for low-income and economically depressed areas, higher wages for low-skilled workers, increased incentives for businesses which would lower property taxes and free up more disposable income for lower class families, etc. etc. etc. But, hey who knows, maybe he was the one republican out there who genuinely is interested in the plight of the underrepresented, marginalized group of people in our country. Oh, sorry, in the wake of all these natural disasters we've been witnessing, I thought hell had frozen over too.
