Order of Omega

For those of you that have a chapter of Order of Omega on your campus, does the chapter act soley as an honorary organization or does it take a more active role? What are some interesting functions that you have seen the organization sponsor?

I wanted to add a question to this topic.
I was reading about the Order of Omega chapter at Sam Houston State U. here in Texas and I was informed that this was the first chapter. It was originally a local chapter and then spread across the U.S. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm just curious.

Actually the Order of Omega was founded in 1959 at the University of Miami. The first chapter was chartered at Southern University of Mississippi in 1967. This info can be verified at http://www.orderofomega.org/

My senior year at school was the first year that we had Order of Omega (our Greek Advisor had pushed to bring it, and succeeded). We didn't have initiation until late in the spring, so it was just too close to the end of the year to do much. It was solely an honary kind of organization.

However, I spoke with some friends that are still at school, and they have slowly been getting more active, 1 or 2 community serive events a semester and showing a presence at events like Homecoming.

From what I understand, it's still viewed mainly as an honorary organization, but they do try and be as active as possible.

The Order of Omega on our campus is relativly small and designed specifiacally for honoring the top %3 of greek members on campus (based on grades, campus/chapter participation, service, and extracurriculars. We hold a fund raiser during our Greek Week called Penny Wars. This only works if you have a competitive greek week. We raise about $600-$800 and that money is used for educational programming for the greek community as well as scholarships for greeks. As a member, I am working hard to increase the amount of activities, but it is really hard to get things arranged so all members can be there(everyone is a member because they are already so involved and busy!).

However ... I did join Order of Omega. As stated upthread, you must be an outstanding member of a GLO to be considered for membership.

My most memorable activity (aside from my initiation) was volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank.

As their site says, the Order of Omega was taken national by the Miami Dean of Fraternities Patrick Halloran.

Here is a picture of him from about 1972. He is in the upper right. The man in the middle is the president of the university, Henry King Stanford.

President Stanford wanted an informal sit-down talk with interested students, but it was basically an IFC/PanHel meeting.

At the school where I was initiated into Order of Omega, they are in charge of the Greek Awards Ceremony.

At my school, we're basically an honorary organization. We do work with Gamma Sigma Alpha and the Greek Life Office to help grade end of year award packets, but that's about it.

I like President Stanford's tie. And the guy behind him in the TKE letters totally looks like Bluto.
