The chicken, the road, the truth
Ever since I was a small boy, I've been hearing a lot of different explanations as to why the chicken crossed the road. Some of them quite bizarre. The more I puzzle over this, the more I think that maybe the chicken and the road are metaphors. Does the chicken represent man and the road god? Anyone got a definitive answer?

Perhaps the joke is just a caution to our modern society...not to overcomplicate things.
Simple solutions and explanations are often correct but sadly overlooked.
The chicken did not cross the road to fill out his tax forms, buy the latest fashions, complete a merger-acquistion agreement, file a lawsuit, run a marathon, or mow the lawn.
The chicken simply crossed the road to get to the other side. There is no better way to get to the other side than walking across that road.
Simple. Beautiful. Peaceful. The Chicken.

That was insightfull Gr8alphaxi. "Simple. Beautiful. Peaceful. The Chicken." That has to go in the great quotes thread.
Anyway, to answer your question Optimist Prime (digging the Transformers referrence by the way) - the other side of the road is the metaphor at work here. It represents the further of our goals as we make our way through this weary world. The road represents the challenges we face and must rise to daily. Therefore, the other side becomes the representation of accomplishment and completion. However, the journey does not end there, for there are far more roads to cross.

actually, it's not important. like the Oddysey teaches us, the destination isn't important, the journey itself is what matters. The chicken decided to take a chance, risking vehicular death in order to see what was on the other side. The traveling is the focus, not the result.

because of being the JD Salinger fan that I am, I ponder whether the chicken, like Holden, felt he was disappearing everytime he decided to cross one of these proverbial "roads" we speak of. I bet if he did, he wouldn't cross too many roads. Also, if he stopped in the middle of the road to decide whether or not he should continue to cross the road since he was disappearing, he was probably hit by a car. poor guy.
