That could have some merit if they were just taking food and water - or other food stuffs that would perish anyway. It's the looting of electronics and the Athlete's Foot store that seems ridiculous. Besides the criminality fo it, what do these people think they are going to do with 50 pairs of Nikes and a new tv? It can't go up with them in the helicopter basket.

Yeah, as someone said, there is a difference between looting for food, water, medical supplies vs Polo shirts.

The sad part is that these people are are looting luxury items, don't even realize that there is no place for them to wear, much less store that mess - not to mention the fact that they are going to die because they are focused on getting crap (electronics, washer n dryer, etc.) versus trying leaving the city.

I still can't believe that NO is basically underwater.

As they area already talking about how they will rebuild and New Orleans will rise again, part of me wonders whether that's a smart idea. Unless they can come up with a levee that can handle a Cat 5, then they are just setting themselves up to go through this again. Maybe that's doomsday thinking on my part, but the last couple years have seen so many records when it comes to hurricanes, and NO is so particularly vulnerable, that I worry that as soon as they get things resembling some sense of normalcy, they will face another storm like this.

I was feeling that way about the news too, especially when I woke up at 4 am to use the restroom and ended up watching CNN for another hour. Then the thought crossed my mind... At least I can just turn off the TV. These people are living this. They can't just change the channel and have it all go away. What an incredible tragedy.

Hi Everyone:

Some bad news. My parents house is gone in Pass Christian. My parents have filed the insurance claim. We are safe and so is everyone in my family so that's all that matters. For now they will stay with me in Oxford, MS until they can go back to see where the house use to be. We have lots of support from friends around the country and of course, my lovely AOII sisters, so I know we can get through this.

I am so sorry to hear that OleMissGlitter. My heart goes out to you and your family.

On the note of looting...apparently it isn't just stores that people are looting. There have been some "SCUM" (sorry that is what I think right now) who have been breaking into people's HOUSES!!! How can they be so rude and inconsiderate.

I have to agree that those pictures of the looting just drove me crazy.

What drives me crazy is how they like to caption pictures and word articles as noted here.

OleMissGlitter I feel so sorry for you and your parents... the CBC's footage from a helicopter flying over Pass Christian and the highway showed just how little is left of the houses and the highway - I hope that your family was able to save many treasured items.

I thought that I had seen the worst when I was living in SoFla during Hurricane Andrew. This is much worse! SoFla didn't have the flooding problem so we were able to begin making repairs as soon as the winds died down. It still took years to rebuild some parts of Miami! I can't imagine the time it will take to rebuild New Orleans.

No, it will definitely happen, and I don't think that's a bad idea.

New Orleans levees are currently built to handle Cat 3 storms. They only gave in a handful of places -- granted that was enough to wreck havoc. But this was a 500 year storm, meaning only to be expected once in any 500 year period.

They'll rebuild, and they should. New Orleans has too much history and too much pride not be rebuild. And they may strengthen the levees in the process.

I can speak from some experience with living through major hurricane damage. When it happens, a real "we're not going to let this defeat us" attitude takes over. It becomes important to rebuild -- it's a kind of victory over the tragedy.
