One problem with the tracks near my house is that we only have flashing lights, no bar that comes down. Numerous times a month, the lights malfunction and flash when there is no train. I always stop and look carefully before I go through them, but I have seen people get complacent and just go without looking. The train comes around a curve so if you don't pay attention, you could easily get hit. I also see idiots stop for a red light and find themselves straddling the tracks. They have nowhere to go if a train comes while they're stopped there.

At Pitt, at least one student a year gets hit by a bus when crossing Fifth Avenue because it's three lanes of traffic going one way and a bus lane going the other. They look and see no traffic is coming from their right, then step off the curb into the bus lane and....splat!

That sounds just like here - I guess the person doesn't see a car coming, tries to cross, and forgets about the train car until it's too late.

You know, I was watching this film back in high school, called "The Blame Game" about how Americans are trained not to ever take responsibility for themselves (we're the "superior" country, ya know) and one of the cases brought up was this homeless couple who lived down in the subway and tried to sue the subway station b/c the train hit them while they were having sex on the tracks...

Lightbulb

The only one I knew who was faster than a speeding bullet and a speeding train was Superman.

People commit suicide by jumping front of TTC subway trains in Toronto. I don't know how many people are killed each year by jumping in front of a train (TTC doesn't release those numbers), but I'm hardly surprised when there is a train delay for a "medical emergency".
