Married women can't join a sorority - post from Greeklife
I had a question about this, and thought this was a better place to ask it then in the general forum since it pertained to Alpha Gam. I don't remember specifically, but I vaguely remember being told at some point of my four years as an undergrad that there was something about being married or having a baby...something. I know there are some more AGD knowledgable sisters out there that could answer this for sure. Maybe it was something that was rumor that I heard through a senior when I was a freshman and as such believed whatever they told me

That is an OLD rule!! It used to be that a member that got married or became pregnant was not allowed to be an active member of the chapter. This was changed, if I'm not mistaken, at the 1993 convention. These members may now remain active OR may go alumnae under the "special circumstances" section of Membership Eligibility. I hope that answers you question.

Tracey,
First of all, welcome to Greek Chat...we love it when new sisters join us on the boards. I have a question that maybe you can clarify for me. Can a collegiate still remain active when the pregnancy is out of wedlock? Isn't that a standards issue?
Loyally,
Maria
(PS: I'm not trying to start controversy about the merits of single motherhood, marriage, abortion, adoption, etc. Its just an honest question that I'd like to know the answer to. )

The one about marriage I KNOW isn't true. About four years ago a girl went through rush and she was already married. She went to one house on campus and the girl she was talking to was like "So have you met the girl that is married??" and acted all like she was in horror. She ended up pledging Alpha Gam and was a wonderful, active sister for four years!!! Sarah

Hi Maria and thanks for the welcome!!
It was at the 1993 convention, if I'm not mistaken, this "rule" about pregnancy out of wedlock was overturned. The original "rule" was that if a member became pregnant and was unmarried she wasn't allowed to be an active collegian. At the 1993 convention, after MANY LONG hours of debate this was overturned. From what I remember... There was a chapter that had a member that became pregnant from a rape. According to the "rule" she couldn't remain active... The member wouldn't consider having an abortion because it was against her religious beliefs and was planning on giving the child up for adoption. The chapter didn't feel that it was fair to be forced to turn their back on a sister... This member needed her chapter!! Not only was she dealing with being raped, but being pregnant with a child she didn't want.
Personally I'm glad that Alpha Gamma Delta now allows women who are married and or pregnant. These two parts of a woman's life don't make her any less "sister material".
I hope this clarifies!!

Thanks for the clarification, Tracey! I'm glad Alpha Gamma Delta has been so progressive about this issue. I think that as long as you show up when your sisters need you, it doesn't matter whether you're married or have a baby! To me, that's what ETT is all about.

Welcome to GreekChat!
AGDs, Tracey's one of the sisters I met in Atlanta. She and I met while "getting some fresh air".
Congrats on a great recruitment and we will see you on the boards!

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Always nice to have things clarified, and also good to know that as it was said AGD is more progressive.
