Unhappy Can't believe this actually happens!

A pnm whom I wrote a rec for decided to "suicide" my sorority. Bad move I know, but she didn't ask for advice and I'm not sure what her options were. She didn't get a bid, but the horrific thing is that no one contacted this poor girl. She showed up at the designated site thinking she got a bid, and they told her that she had no bid and esorted her off site. Her Rush Counselor "Pi Chi" neglected to give her "the dreaded call". She was very upset. She said she would have been fine if they had called her, but the humiliation she had to endure was so unwarranted. I don't know who exactly to lodge a complaint with as this should not happen to ANYONE! Anyone else out there have this type of situation?

Angry

That is wrong on so many levels! Someone dropped the ball. No one deserved that to happen to them

You're right, it shouldn't happen, but I don't doubt that occasionally it does. It's certainly unfortunate but I can see how, with these huge recruitments, one of those phone calls could be missed. It must have left an awful taste in her mouth for sororities.

That's really awful!! You might want to let the Greek Life Advisor know.

Something similar happened when I rushed. The PNMs were suppose to meet at 11am. So around 10:50 I started walking from my dorm to our meeting place. When I was approaching the meeting place (it was around 10:55), I got "the call." By that time it was too late, I had already met up with some friends. I ended up watching from the window at the Union.

^^^^Co-sign. I wouldn't get into the fact that it was your chapter, but the situation is totally uncalled for.

It doesn't really matter which chapter it was, because it's Panhellenic's responsibility to make "the call".

At my school, NOBODY got called. (This may have changed. I hope it has.) Each PNM met individually with her rho chi, who gave her either a bid or a letter informing her that she had not received a bid. From there, she either went to her new sorority's bid day party, or went home if she hadn't received a bid or if she'd chosen to decline her bid. The less fortunate PNMs, who were often in tears, had to walk past all the other PNMs waiting for their bids.

If you're going to call women who didn't get invites/bids, it's imperative to call EVERY woman, to avoid exactly this sort of situation.

I am sorry this happened to her. Unfortunately things like this do happen (occasionally) for any number of reasons:

*The Pi Chi may have forgotten to make the call.
*The Pi Chi may have been mistakenly told (by Panhellenic) that this girl got a bid, when she didn't.
*The Pi Chi could have delegated the responsibility to another Pi Chi in her group, and she may have forgotten.
*It may have been someone else's responsibility to make the call, and they didn't do it.

I think a (reasonably polite) email to the person at Greek Life letting them know that this happened (they may not know) is a good idea. They may not be able to do anything about it, but at least they can make sure that it doesn't happen next year.

That's the key, to try to protect future PNMs from enduring this same pain and embarrassment.

I saw this and I just had to post.

I was a Pi Chi at my school this year where we had huge numbers of PNMs.
We had this situation happen as well, and I can tell you, it was no fault of any of the Pi Chis.
After round 3, there were about 15 girls who were supposed to be released from recruitment and had no invites...in 1 group! Something had to be wrong, so as the Pi Chis scrambled to correct the entry mistakes (the computer didn't mess up, fortunately), they were not calling any of those girls.
Turns out, one of them actually was released, and there was no time to call her before she showed up for preferentials.

So a terrible situation for all. It's not like the Pi Chis/Rho Chis/Rho Gammas enjoy making PNMs cry and then taking care of them.

So true!! I agree with everyone else who said let the Greek advisor/Panhellenic know - I would wager she'll receive an apology call (if not more) from the Pi Chi.

I contacted Greek LIfe..

Yes, I contacted Greek Life and they are looking into it. I'm not trying to blame anyone or get a pi chi into trouble, I would just like this girl to receive an apology and an explanation. I absolutely know this wasn't done intentionally, but it hurt this girl badly all the same.

And yes, they were to receive a call if they had been dropped from recruitment or didn't receive a bid on bid day. This particular girl is a strong, smart girl and will come out fine, I just don't want this to happen to anyone else.
