Recruitment registration

How strict are universities about their recruitment registration deadline? I was talking with a friend of mine last night and she mentioned her daughter (1st year attending college) is now considering joining a sorority, but would like to wait until spring. I explained to my friend that it would be better for her to go through fall formal rush rather than wait, but when I check the university website fall registration forms were due last week. Could she still register at this point? Should she contact the Panhellenic office and ask them about late registration?

i agree with you that she would have far more choice going thru fall formal recruitment. it can't hurt to contact the school's panhellenic office to see if she can register for fall recruitment. she might have to pay a late fee, but only the panhellenic/greek life office will be able to tell her that.

they may need your help rounding up recommendations.

Usually they'll take them up through the morning of.
But call the office to make sure. And don't wait that late!

At our school, PNM's can literally sign up on day 1 of recruitment. It's amazing how different it is across the country! Wow!

Yeah, this is definitely a question that she would need to ask the Greek Life Office. Different Campus Panhellenics will have different policies.

One thing to consider, is this a school where recs are pretty important for a successful recruitment (i.e. large, in the South)? If so, AND she is lucky enough to register late, she's going to need recs ASAP.

Everything happens for a reason. She might end up with the group she wants in spring, and be more acclimated to college as well.

I'd send it anyway. Couldn't hurt to try. BTW, did she talk to the Greek advisor? Or just somebody in the office?

I actually called first thing this morning and talked with someone in the office, not the Greek advisor. I was going to spend the day putting together a Greek 101 manual and everything she needed to get accomplished prior to the start of rush to help her out since neither her or her mother are familiar with the Greek system. This has bothered me all day. Perhaps if she wasn't such a delightful young lady, I would just set it aside and move on. I also find the fact that she knows little about each sorority to be refreshing. She could go into rush completely open minded and truely let her heart lead her in the right direction.

The University took the registration form link down, so going ahead and applying is not an option at this point. The only link they have open at this point is for COB.

That doesn't seem right to me either. If there is a growing demand at a school, that is what higher quotas/total or extension is for.

ETA: Which is why Arizona is adding ADPi this year!

Actually .. I've been thinking about this since I saw the restriction earlier this summer. I'm thinking its a matter of the (huge) size of the chapters and the fire restrictions on the number of people allowed in the houses and this is a way of keeping the number of PNMs at each house plus the number of actives under the restrictions.

Is 1200 pretty high for the campus?

If it is, it may be a way of telling people to get their stuff turned in ASAP without really having the effect of restricting the number very greatly.

I also happen to think that having a numerical cut off really close to the actually events makes a little sense in terms of recruitment planning by the groups. I don't know how frilly they are, but adding a 100 girls at the very last minute could be hard at a campus that does food and stuff.

And they allow registration until August 14th when recruitment starts on the 18th. So while you can't register the day of, it's not like you have to know too far in advance.

ETA: looking at the recruitment thread http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=97907, it looks like fewer than 750 girls were placed with quota at 11 chapters last year, so maybe 1200 gives a lot of cushion before any cap would really kick in. 450 would seem like a lot of PNMs not finishing recruitment if they started with 1200.

My records from alumnae panhellenic handouts report that there were 966 PNMs registered for 2006 and 1001 PNMs registered for 2007 .. so a cutoff of 1200 is 200 more than the most that have been registered in quite a while. Also, even though quota was reported at 67, most (10?) chapters had quota additions and 757 women were offered bids.

Then they should simply add more parties per round. Give the PNM's 1 or more "off" parties, which gives them a bit of a break and keeps the size of the parties down. But they shouldn't limit the number of women who participate.
