Retro Recruitment
I've been a lurker here for a while, and I love the retro threads. So here's mine. I went to a West Coast college that had a casual, but competitive rush. I came from a family where nobody had been in a sorority, other than my uncle's wife who was a Kappa at Penn. My mother was kind of a hippie in college, so she thought sororities were horrible.
My university had fall rush before school started. When I opened the door to my dorm room, there was sorority paraphernalia everywhere. I noticed that several other doors on the dorm hall had greek letters and symbols all over them too - keys and anchors and kites and arrows. Never having heard much about sororities, it all was alien to me. It soon became clear that most of the blonde, cheerleader types seemed to be in certain sororities and the debs seemed to be in certain sororities. (I am neither blonde or a deb).
Over the course of the year, I got to know a lot of girls in sororities because I had Pi Phis, Thetas, DGs, Kappas and ADpis on my hall. My roommate was in the Go-Gos and was always doing fun things. I thought it would be interesting to see what this whole sorority thing was about. I was sure I wouldn't actually join one, but wanted to go through rush - kind of like a research project. I had to promise my mother I would never join.
We had nine sororities:
Theta
Pi Phi
Alpha Chi Omega
Chi Omega
Kappa
Alpha Phi
AGD
DG
ADpi
I rushed in the 80s, so I'll use 80s bands for the sororities.
A Flock of Seagulls
Go-Gos
Wham!
Men At Work
Culture Club
Cyndi Lauper
The Clash
Devo
Frankie Goes Hollywood

I hate to admit it but I loved The Clash. So I hope you rocked the casbah and had a great rush!

Slightly hurt that Dexy's Midnight Runners didn't make the list.

I agree, they're one of my faves too, but look at your sig -- when I saw the list and saw Culture Club, my first thought was, "cuteASAbug's gonna love it!"
I think I'm gonna "Relax" and go with Frankie Goes to Hollywood, tho...

Y'all are bringing back a majorly repressed memory-I now suddenly recall wearing to skit party the horrifying combo of the following (we had winter recruitment):
White blouse (oh it was a BLOUSE for sure)
Preppy print Foulard style bow tie to go w/ said blouse (apparently I thought this would be a sophisticated ensemble ala St. Elmo's Fire's Ally Sheedy)
Some scary vest that allegedly coordinated with the above items
Wool flannel skirt that dropped below the knee
White hose (ok, those 2 words alone should give one hives these days)
Flats
And of course the ubiquitous BOW to hold up my permy big 80s hair
Could you just die to know those clothes had ever been on your body, individually or in combination?????
No, but wait, it gets worse. I was accompanied by my roommate, whose idea of style involved scrunchy socks that color coordinated with every outfit she owned, twistabeads, neon everything, and sometimes Miami Vice style tops. TreSemme hair spray was her BFF.
And despite the scary story I just related, we actually both received bids from the same house. AND are still active in our GLO. Go figure.

My roommate wore the scrunchie socks with her high-top white Reebok aerobic shoes. Remember those!
