FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 18, 2007
Sigma Sigma Sigma to Colonize at the University of Missouri-Columbia
(1926 - 2007)
Woodstock, VA - October 18, 2007 - Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority ("Tri Sigma") is delighted to announce that it will colonize its 184th collegiate chapter at the University of Missouri-Columbia in fall 2008. The University of Missouri-Columbia is one of only 34 institutions in America to gain membership in the elite Association of American Universities, ranking them in the top 4 percent of the nation's four-year institutions. In the University's offer to colonize, Julie L. Drury, Panhellenic Advisor, wrote that Tri Sigma "would be the best fit for our campus".
Tri Sigma was founded in 1898 on the principles of lifelong friendship, exemplary character and ethical conduct. This is what Tri Sigma will bring to the University of Missouri-Columbia and the women who join. National President, Laura Sweet, stated "that it is indeed a pleasure for Tri Sigma to accept the invitation to colonize at the University of Missouri-Columbia. We are sincerely thankful to the College Panhellenic and University Administrators. We are proud that in 2008 the University of Missouri-Columbia will be a home to Tri Sigma".
Tri Sigma is known throughout the Greek community as being an innovative and progressive organization. It is the first national sorority to adopt a zero tolerance policy on hazing; first to initiate a Chapter Accreditation program in response to the Call for Values Congruence; the first to install a chapter outside of North America, the first to colonize in Alaska, the first to implement a 6-8 week new member program; and the first to adopt a nationally recognized play therapy program for hospitalized children.
Sigma Sigma Sigma was founded in 1898 at Longwood College in Farmville, VA. Tri Sigma strives to prepare women for life after college by advocating bonds of friendship, developing strong character in its members, and advocating the highest standards of conduct. Currently, there are over 96,000 members and over 200 alumnae and collegiate chapters. The Sorority supports play therapy for hospitalized children and assists in providing playrooms for hospitalized children in Chapel Hill, NC and Dallas, TX through funds contributed to the Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation.

Needless to say this is a HUGE DEAL and we are all SO EXCITED TO HEAR THE NEWS!

met with some of EC last night
Met with some of the Executive Council last night. I heard some of the campuses the national organizations plans to target for colonization / recolonization. Would be exciting news. Definitely moving Ever Forward in expanding our sisterhood.

A few different numbers are floating around and I've heard nothing final, but it is being said that our Mizzou colony has 140 new members.
I'll be sure to update if I hear something official.

That is correct! 140 women accepted invitations to join during the formal recruitment process, and they are still conducting interviews with PNMs, so that number is likely to rise by the end of the week.

Most of the sororities at Mizzou have been there forever.. like early 1900's.
I think the newest was Kappa Delta in the 70's.
This is fantastic. Enrollment is up with freshman this year (thanks to the football team) and I want to think because of Sigma!!!!
still wearing purple after all these years!!!

It's great to know that recruitment has been so successful!
Where will the chapter be housed?

they're building a house- the floor plan looks really nice, all suite style rooms, underground parking (parking is terrifying to find on campus!). I think they purchased the lots around 505 Rollins- like just west of Pi Phi.
also- sidenote, to answer from before on the new chapters- KD came on i think in the '70s sometime, A Phi did a "membership review" in 1998, and Phi Mu came on in 2000 or 2001
