Miss Universe 2007
The Miss Universe pageant will be coming on this Memorial Night on Monday at 9 eastern on NBC.
I can't wait for the pageant, but why does it have to be on Memorial Day? Why can't it be on a Friday?

Everybody's out for the weekend. Being that it's Memorial Day, I'm sure millions of Americans will be traveling on Thursday/Friday.
IIRC (and you pageant followers, please correct me)...Miss Teen USA/Miss USA/Miss Universe has been televised on a Monday night in recent years because many people tend to be home that night.

I'm fairly sure you're right, OTW - seems that all of the broadcasted pageants are on Mondays lately. But you have to admit, it's better than watching Charlie Sheen.

Some Miss Universe trivia for ya...
Sylvia Hitchcock Carson, Miss Universe 1967, is a Chi Omega. I recently met one of her Chi O Sisters from Alabama who told me how she happened to be drafted for the Miss Alabama pageant. She simply answered the phone at the Nu Beta Chapter house when pageant organizers were trying to encourage sorority participation. She entered Miss Alabama...and won. She went on to Miss USA...and won. Then to Miss Universe and wON!
Here's a story on what she's doing today:

I think it's almost funny if they boo'd because of US policies. No one who has any say in those policies gives a crap what happens at Trump's pageant. The vast majority of people in our country could care less about these pageants. It's really not a matter of national pride in our country, unlike other countries. Hell, Miss America can't even get TV coverage. Miss USA & Miss Universe get aired because Trump has made them slut it up. I turned it off at 10:30 because it was time for bed. If they did it 8-10 they might get more viewers - more kids could watch. But then Trump would have to tone it down- it's gotten to be more of a Victoria's Secret fashion show than a pageant.
I would've loved to see Miss Tanzania win, she seemed like she had a great personality and it would've been nice to have a different kind of beauty recognized. But, unfortunately, her walk was terrible.
I liked Miss Japan, and I really liked Miss Venezuela - no one else could hold a candle to her in the bathing suit competition.
Miss USA was just ehhhh for me. I didn't find her nearly as attractive as many of the other contestants. She seemed friendly and fun, but not incredibly gorgeous. That said, I thought some of the other countries were sorta fugly...
Mario Lopez and Vanessa Minillo's attempts at Spanish were pitiful. You know behind the scenes he's probably play grab ass with all of the contestants.

Well I have to say at least Brazil and Japan, having actually ANSWERED the questions, were the final two. It is annoying that USA, who also ANSWERED the question and didn't just pull things out of her but (like Venezuela and Korea did) got 4th place. But that is how Miss Universe works. You look pretty, answer the question politely, even if your answer has absolutely nothing to do with the question and you win (i.e. Zuleka from last year). I guess this is why I actually prefer Miss America. Miss America just doesn't slut it up (thank you for the term kddani!).
I also thought it was so rude for the Mexican people to boo USA. Yes, she tripped but she pulled herself up, smiled a huge smile and went about it. Just because Mexico is the host country doesn't mean that they deserve the title.

From Yahoo (after calling it "the Troubled Miss Universe Pagaent"):
"This year's contest was marked by controversy, with a handful of Mexicans booing Smith in the run-up to the finals because of what they saw as U.S. unfriendliness toward illegal immigrants."
Personally, I didn't care for Miss USA's evening dress - but I wasn't a judge. As I said before, I'm shocked that nothing fell out when she took her tumble. The fact that she got up and handled it as well as she did brought her up in my estimation - let's face it, we've all made mistakes.
I thought that Miss India was stunning in the swimsuit competition, and for the life of me, couldn't understand why Miss Russia didn't bother to do her roots! This year's pagaent just didn't have that je ne sais pas that past years have had. Very disappointing.

Makes me wonder how Mexicans would feel if the situation was reversed on illegal immigration (like us Americans were illegally going into their country, seeking employment, spending their tax dollars on medical care, etc...)? How much you wanna bet they wouldn't be booing then.

Two Points:
1. Miss USA was booed at several events in Mexico leading up to the Miss Universe Pageant.
2. I wasn’t really surprised to hear of this considering Mexico is the same country that chants Osama Bin Laden and drowns out the US National Anthem with their relentless booing during USA vs. Mexico soccer games.
In the past I just shrugged it off because honestly why generalize a whole country based on rowdy sports fans but now I'm just getting tired of it.

I find it funny that the booing is getting to be such a big deal. Was I "turned off" by the fact that Miss USA was booed? Yeah of course, but just chalk it up to being sore losers.
I read the article that said that people booed Miss USA b/c of immigration laws, but I agree w/ OTW. I seriously doubt that the audience booed Miss USA because of immigration laws, they were just upset that Miss USA got into the top 5 and Miss Mexico didn't.

I'm sorry, I just have to say something about this and flame me if you'd like. But i'm sooo tired of hearing people generalizing Mexicans into this type of category. Am I going to deny that there are illegal immigrants who come to this country and demand these types of things? Of course not, I know there are some. But you do also realize that there are many illegal immigrants who come to this country just to have a better life for them and their children? Do you that MANY illegal immigrants NEVER go to the doctor. George Lopez or any Mexican comic might joke around about it, but the truth is, it happens! I come from an immigrant family, I can tell you from experience, its the truth. One of my good friends, fell and cut her eye on a fence and her mom REFUSED to take her to the hospital? Why? Cause she was petrified that somehow the gov't would find out that they were illegal and deport them. Many people don't use any gov't services for fear that they'd be exposed and then deported.
And the fact that they say that the illegal immigrants "demand" things, do they really? Do they hold guns to the doctor's heads and demand that they treat them? NO! I'm so tired of hearing that...they don't demand crap.
I don't mean to start drama with anyone. I understand where the Americans are coming from, I know that we, as taxpayers, pay for those illegal immigrants that want all the "free" services we provide. But many Americans don't know what its like to come from another country, to struggle to give your family the best life.
Many people keep saying " well the immigrants can just get a visa and come here legally" but it isn't as easy said and done. In each state in Mexico, they only give out a set amount of Visas a month (let's say 100). So people can apply for a visa until their dying breath and they might never get one. That's how it is down there. When I went down for a dance competition, we met a dance teacher who had been trying to get her visa for 5 years. When we got back to the US my mom send many letters to the consulate, where the teacher was trying to get her visa, saying exactly what the teacher would be doing, but did she get her visa? Nope, but her cousin (who applied only once) got a visa.

I'm sorry I'm not going to feel super sorry for people who come into this country ILLEGALLY!!!!!! They are wanting the same RIGHTS and BENEFITS of citizens yet they BROKE OUR LAW. Being that I live in a state where illegal immigration is insane, it's something that is on our news daily and that I deal with daily.
Edit: I wanted to mention that the rights and benefits of being a legal citizen is what the illegal immigrants are "fighting for" in my state. They feel that they should be able to get those rights yet they are illegal. Hence my opinion.
I have absolutely no problem with immigration, with parents wanting better for their children, but DO IT LEGALLY!
Go ahead and flame me as well, not that this is the appropriate forum or thread. I was just trying to say, that in my own opinion, I don't think they would be "singing" the same tune if they (the Mexican Government and people) had to deal with the amount of illegal immigration as we do. I apologize that it didn't "come off" that way.
