Right reasons for going Greek

So if nothing in the 'Wrong reasons for going Greek' thread applies to you, tell me, why DID you decide to go Greek?

Did you always see yourself as being Greek (ie. while in high school) or did you decide after entering college?

+ I can't answer my first question because I'm not Greek.

+ As for the second question, No. I never thought I'd want to ever join a sorority because the pervasive stereotypes of being in one. But I got a change of heart and here I am

xo.

Congratualtions!

I was in the same boat when I first got to College.

From a small asnd poor Family, the first one who went to College, I had no thought of joining anything I knew nothing about!

I played Tennis and Base Ball in College so who needed Greeks? I joined APO and was happy.

But I then changed Schools and studies along with other things and saw many Greeks in College in summer school.

I saw the fun they were having and enjoyed it!

Then I found the group I started and have been Friends with all of them for many years.

Isnt that what it is all about?

I never thought about going Greek until I saw the opportunity to truly make a different for my community.

I went Greek because Greek organizations have a special power: They can hold their members liable for inaction, unlike any regular student organization. Through my fraternity, I've had the opportunity to make a significant impact on my campus and community.

- To make friends.

- To get involved in an organization that you agree with the purpose of.

- For the philanthropy/service.

- To network better. May not seem as altruistic as previous reasons, but some of us need a bit more of help with this.

* Wanting to get involved with something on campus that's high profile. Greeks on my campus basically are the only people who care to participate in alot of campus activities like Homecoming stuff, going to sporting events, Student Senate elections, etc. Greek events like LipSync & Songfest are highly publicized events. I wanted to be a part of that.

* I think it's okay if the idea of having a group of girls to party with encourages girls to consider recruitment. Alot of times, that's what piques girl's interest in rushing. Then they go through recruitment and get really interested in the other larger aspects of being in a sorority. If the idea of having girlfriends to go out with gets girls wanting to know more about us, then go for it.

i joined because i was a transfer student and i thought i would be good way to make friends. i asked a girl who was already in a sorority about her sorority and how she liked it. this girl who was a complete stranger to me was so sweet and answered all of my questions with patience and understanding. when most people think sorority they think some stuck up bimbo who won't give you the time of day unless you're greek. because this girl was so nice it was the push i needed in the greek direction. i did not join the same sorority as her, but she was a great friend to me throughout my college experience.

I went greek by accident. I had been having problems with school b/c i wasn't really involved in anything. I wasn't that happy with my life at school. Then my roommate was invited to some COB parties Alpha Xi was having and she asked if i would go with her just so she wouldn't have to go by herself. Well the first time i met the girls i felt like i have known them for a lot longer than six months. I didn't know if i was going to join if i got a bid when i went into the party, but i knew when i left that if i got a bid i would join in a heartbeat.

Why the fuck would you not go greek? Do you really want to spend your college carrer listening to emo cds and painting your fingernails black? Are any of you legacies, or even have a southern greek family tradition to carry on? From most of the post I have seen here I would't even offer you a bid.

And most of us wouldn't want a bid from you

Anyway to answer both questions:

I did not see myself as going Greek. I had the sterotypes of sororities in my head, but my mom encouraged me to rush. She's an ADPi at the U of I and our personalities are totally different, so I doubted she understood Greek Life at my smaller Jesuit University. However, I went through rush on her dime er.. 35 dollars.. and discovered I really liked the girls I met (at least in some of the chapters) so I ended up preffing both ADPi and Sigma Kappa, put SK down as my number one..

And here I am

Thank God too because apparently all my non-greek friends were hiding their emo/goth tendencies from me. I couldn't have stood that.

An intersting Post!

I am not really sure why You are attending this Site other than being a bother or pest.

You have nothing to give.

Yes I came here to show what I can give to the global greek community. That is my dream. Are you kidding me? I was wasted when I wrote that but it still stands in my mind. Why wouldnt you go greek? I have never heard any guy say, because I wanted to give back to the community, or help others. No its really more about brotherhood, achieveing a level of social prominince, and for the connections that benefit you the rest of your life. Granted the band parties, sorostitutes, and parties are an attractive part too.

I'm shocked at your selfishness. I know you're here to cause trouble, but I doubt that your attitude is singular to you. It breaks my heart. Why wouldn't you take what you have and give back? So, you enjoy it and you bring joy to others.
