You are correct - you must be an active member to register for the convention.

it means you can't register unless you know a brother. you may be able to attend the public functions by purchasing tickets - call the national office.

Dear Brothers,

Thank you for your overwhelming response to the summons to come to Washington, DC for the purpose of convening the Centennial Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on July 25 - 30, 2006.

Because of your diligence, we must now terminate registration to the Centennial Convention. Registrations received via mail and postmarked, or those faxed or brought to the General Office after midnight on June 3, 2006 will not be accepted. You will not be able to register on-line either as of midnight on this date and you cannot register on-site. We simply do not have the space to accommodate additional attendees at many of the previously planned events.

If you have previously purchased a full registration you are still eligible to purchase additional tickets to the Friday evening Centennial VIP Reception and Gala Concert featuring Brother Lionel Richie, and sponsored by the Education Foundation and to the Saturday evening Black and Gold Banquet.

Thank you for making this Centennial Celebration the largest event in the history of our fraternity. We have far exceeded the capacity of our facilities and the expectations of our convention planning team.

Fraternally,

Darryl R. Matthews, Sr.,

General President

Did folx just greatly underestimate how huge this would be, or was it limited by design?

the host hotel is one of the largest hotels in DC. the property once was a sheraton - i use to manage group and meeting space for the chain in my much younger years - in addition to the host hotel there is an alternate property that we have across the street - i understand this hotel is also full.

speace would be a problem for any organization of this size - especially given the fact we celebrate 100 years of service. brothers that have never attended convention are registered for this one. its a once in a lifetime event.

This should be a memo to the rest of us. I used to work in sales at the Washington Hilton in the early 90's and I remember back in '92-'93 I was booking meeting space and overflow accommodations for conventions that were scheduled for 2000-01. Planning is key.

I am also extending a hearty welcome to you, Professor and all of your brothers in attendance to Washington, DC. I am a native Washingtonian. I've visited many other major cities but there is no place like home. So welcome to my home!

I look forward to seeing you. I remember how nice you were to me and my Sorors last summer in North Carolina. I do plan to attend your public events.
