Fraternity suspended, hazing alleged
Saturday, December 10, 2005
By JEFF AMY
Staff Reporter

The University of South Alabama has suspended its chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity amid a hazing inquiry.

Tim Beard, USA's dean of students, said the school is still piecing together what happened, but said some students appeared to have been injured.

"There is evidence of some injuries here, we don't know to what extent," Beard said.

A regional leader of the fraternity's national organization issued a "cease and desist" letter dated Tuesday to the Eta Nu chapter. A copy of the letter received by Beard cites suspected violations of national rules barring hazing, local deviations from prescribed initiation procedures and "paddling, stroking and all indecent acts."

Maynard Odom, an alumnus who advised the chapter, said the university is investigating hazing that may have taken place over a period of several months.

Beard said a chapter member is in a local hospital, and USA officials met with him Friday to try to see if he ended up there because of hazing injuries. Odom said he had visited the hospitalized man Thursday and had been told by doctors that the member was suffering from the flu and dehydration.

Adviser: USA punishes fraternity members for hazing

The Associated Press

The University of South Alabama has disciplined some members of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity because of their roles in physically abusing prospective members, fraternity adviser Lamar Odom said.
Odom said some of the members are appealing their punishments.
Fraternity and sorority adviser Emily Ulmer said a prospective member reported hazing in early December. Disciplinary proceedings are still unknown, partly because federal law bars the release of a student's educational records without their consent.
Dean of Students Tim Beard would not say how many people had been disciplined or what sentences had been issued because their cases are still pending.
When asked if the students were expelled, Odom replied, "Not expelled. Suspended is the word I heard."
Beard said he expected a decision on the chapter, which was indefinitely suspended on Dec. 9, within two weeks.
A Dec. 7 letter sent by regional Kappa Alpha Psi leader Ronald Range said the reported violations included paddling.
