The University of South Alabama has suspended its chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity amid a hazing inquiry.
Tim Beard, USA's dean of students, said the school is still piecing together what happened, but said some students appeared to have been injured.
"There is evidence of some injuries here, we don't know to what extent," Beard said.
A regional leader of the fraternity's national organization issued a "cease and desist" letter dated Tuesday to the Eta Nu chapter. A copy of the letter received by Beard cites suspected violations of national rules barring hazing, local deviations from prescribed initiation procedures and "paddling, stroking and all indecent acts."
Maynard Odom, an alumnus who advised the chapter, said the university is investigating hazing that may have taken place over a period of several months.
Beard said a chapter member is in a local hospital, and USA officials met with him Friday to try to see if he ended up there because of hazing injuries. Odom said he had visited the hospitalized man Thursday and had been told by doctors that the member was suffering from the flu and dehydration.
