Zeta Phi Zeta UTC

Brothers, read this article I found posted today online.

http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_75145.asp

Not very good press for my home chapter. I do not know if they are still on probation or not with the University.

Not good, but at least the story doesnt alledge the incident happened at the Lambda Chi house. I dont know how pertinant it was to mention Lambda Chi. THey could have had dinner and a few drinks at Bennegin's but it dosent mention that..

I guess they mention it because she met the football players there. They could have just said at a 'party near campus' but its more exciting if there is a fraternity mentioned.

From the risk management point of view, the chapter was nto in violation of our policies if they didnt provide the alcohol, it wasnt 3 times the chapter size, there was no hard alcohol and no mass containers, and it wasnt an open party with invitations. If it was just people hanging out at the house drinking, I dont know how the chapter could get in trouble.

I do know thats a whole lotta 'ifs' and usually up in there somewhere there is one jackass who was seen walking around with a bottle of Jim Beam or something.

From the way it says that she "attended a party", it does seem that some of those above mentioned qualifications for policy violations did occur in part. What I am worried about is underage drinking rules and laws violated that may get our chapter closed down, since she is only 18yo.

I am praying for our chapter and fraternity and all of my brothers from my home chapter.

Plus, I did receive word that the chapter is allowing only brothers and associates into the house for the time being.

As You and I just talked, I too am concerned about this Zeta from past history.

A total lock down for Members and Associates only is an excellent idea.

The worry part is an under 21 person having Alcohol there.

I hope that Risk Management wipe up is not to little to late.

With the New Regeim in place, they are more than willing to work with Zetas who are trying to go by the guidelines.

There seem to also be to many things that may not ring true in Her Statements.

Time will tell.

Tom you say this:
"With the New Regeim in place, they are more than willing to work with Zetas who are trying to go by the guidelines."

But will the school see it as that or will they just see that there was a party at the house and inreturn the girl got raped.

But there is alot "ifs, ands," and "buts" about the whole story and what happened.

Lightbulb

Yes, there are a lot of IFs in the story. But it can still boil down to the fact that an 18 year Old was there supposedly drinking as The LXA House and it happened afterwards.

The Key is Underage drinking there!

Whether the School Will is another Matter isnt it?

But, normally if the School pulls Recognition, Our Fraternity will also.

Yes, there are a Lot of Ifs, Ands, and Buts in the Story. But, as bad as it sounds, LXA was Mentioned whether it needed to be or Not. The Name Is Out there for all to Remember and think about.

It still will put a stigma on them. "Guilty Before Found Unguilty"?

News article today in the local paper, The Chattanooga Times-Free Press.....

http://www.timesfreepress.com/

To read the full article, click on the link on the right labeled 'Metro/Region" and then click on article entitled, "Fraternity Headquarters Checks Out UTC Party".

According to the article, the chapter contacted IHQ after the allegations were made.

Aren't these underage drinkers themselves ever prosecuted? They know how old they are, and they know what the drinking age is.

Blaming the fraternities is like blaming the gas station when someone is later found to be driving without a license. If you're caught speeding, do they go back close down the last place you bought gas?

At some point it all becomes Arizona State (or variations on that story), doesn't it? No wonder I've heard that Greek advisors urge their chapters to avoid wearing letters--you can't be painted w/the broad brush that way.

Brothers, I have no new updates to report on my home chapter.

The UTC Police Department did complete their investigation and turned over that to the District Attorney's Office in regards to the alleged actions of the football players.

Waiting is the hard part.......

I graduated from UTC in '97. This story really bugs me. Thanks for posting the articles so I can keep up with the story.

My thoughts are with LXA and I wish y'all the best. I think it would be so unfair to punish the chapter for events that occurred after the party. Its the football players - not LXA - that should be punished. I like the anology posted about the gas stations and drivers license.

I lived in Boling my freshman year and I vividly remember how intimidating and obscene the football players could be to the freshman girls. I won't go into details as I don't want to offend anyone. I was so happy to get out of there and move to New Village (really showing my age - I moved in there the first year they were completed).

I realize that I've been out of school close to 10 years and don't know any of the current members. I really liked some of the brothers when I was in school. Sending good thoughts your way.

Thanks, Beanblossom; your words of kindness really mean a lot. Thanks for being a strong supporter of LCA, both then when you were an undergrad and now.

BTW, this is not to invade your privacy, but where you a member of one of the sororities at UTC? You can respond via PM if you wish to remain 'greek anonymous".

Hi Zeta Phi,

I just pm'd you. I was a Chi Omega at UTC. Sorry, I didn't realize this was a Lambda Chi thread when I first posted. I went to UTC and I'm trying to keep up with this story - not trying to crash the thread or anything.

Thanks.
Beanblossom
