There are problems with it I think.

From an anti-terror standpoint, terrorist organizations have the ability to adapt. The next shoe bomber could be an 80 year old white woman.

From a street crime standpoint, it's so hard to decide what is racial profiling and what is not. I just leave it up to officers to find propable cause, and I'm happy.

Of course, I've never been pulled over for a DWB, I've had friends that have though, and subsequently have been jailed without cause (well, real cause, some officers are pretty creative).

I think the biggest problem facing our police departments around the country is the "blue line" where good cops tolerate antisocial, aggressive, dangerous behavior from others to the point of denying the behavior's existance, or outright defending them. The policing profession needs to be more involved in protecting and serving the public than eachother -- to me, if you face that, many problems like 'racial profiling' would evaporate.

It's really hard for me to comment on, b/c I doubt highly that I will ever be a victim of it.

However, it has happened to super liberal Mr. xo_kathy but he still understand the need for it...at times!!! I've said before many times, Mr. is Puerto Rican but gets mistaken for Arab all the time - by other Arabs. So, needless to say, he got a LOT of suspicious glances post 9-11, he will get stopped and checked at the airport 9 times out of 10. He has yet to ride the NYC subway since they've been checking bags, but he hasn't been checked on the Metro North yet (the commuter train we take in from the burbs). The authorities profiling him at airports or other places that might put other people in danger doesn't actually bother him. However, if he was randomly pulled over because he looked Arab (or Latin for that matter!) then he would be pissed.

So I'm not saying he's ok with it because he's being profiled for a race different than his own. It all has to do with circumstances. Grr, I'm not explaining it very well, but I hope it makes some sense...

I have to seriously question the intelligence of anyone who supports its - particularly those who advocate because of the terrorist attacks...

See every analyst (liberal or conservative) I've seen or read has, more or less, postulated that many of these bombers were recruited from the ranks of those feeling isolated, disaffected, or disempowered - and to me being targeted for your skin colour or race (religion) would seemingly alienate more through the creation of divisions within the over-all community... all one has to do is talk to someone who has been the subject of profiling.

As for crime-related racial profiling it seems to be pretty much as useless; simply for the fact that every "race" is the leading perpatrator demographic of some crimal act... it just doesn't work as well as community policing, because you are throwing too wide a net and expending resources in a counter-productive manner - while at the same time once again alienating and angering a community.

Don't you kind of have to get a person's stats to catch them? Say an Asian guy, approximately 20 years old, driving a red Honda , oh, I don't know, breaks into a computer store. You have to find him, right? And in any city with a large Asian population, you're going to have a lot of 20 year old Asian guys who drive red Hondas. How are you supposed to find the guy if you don't specfically look for that?

Thumbs up

A Good Question.

Why dont you sign up for a ride along with the Local Police and see what it is like!

It takes the People to have the guts to help give info!

If not, Yepper, shit out of luck.!

I loved it when I was racial Prfilling in the north end. Hell, was only one color to deal with.

Question

Wasn't there a previous thread about this somewhere? If not News and Politics, then in one of the NPHC organization's forums for sure...

That isn't racial profiling. Racial profiling is to identify a group of race as a potential criminal. For instance, the police stops a random black male because he thought the black male is up to no good due to his race. That's racial profiling.

Exactly!

Or a kidnapper. Whenever we are in the Bronx together, the cops ALWAYS stare at ME long and hard - like they think I'm going to give them the universal sign for "Come save me from the Hispanic who couldn't possibly be my husband and a very upstanding member of society"!
