Torn : ABC / XYZ

I am very much interested in "ABC" sorority and interested in "XYZ".

"ABC" is currently not on campus and the NPHC advisors don't know how long it will be before they come back (may be years, months...).

Since "meet the greeks" at the beginning of the semester I have kept in contact with a member of XYZ. Recently they had an interest group to see the interest of XYZ on campus to decide if it would be worthwhile to bring the sorority back.

We just came back from thanksgiving break and the member of XYZ that I have been keeping in contact with sent me an email that if I was still interested, contact her ASAP.

My worries are, that I don't have 'business attire' to wear (and that was why I didn't attend the interest meeting and also I would not have wanted to go alone) And I am worried about what they will think of me. I am a young, quiet reserved woman. Im fairly quiet so don't too many people know me on campus rather than seeing my face. If I worry about these things, should I just wait a little while longer for "growth" and/ or wait for [my heart] "ABC" to return and see how that goes- if that will ever happen?! (and while I am still in school.)

i am not even going to pretend to be able to address which of the groups you should look into because i am very unfamiliar with the nphc process.

if your main worry is about not having business attire, you should see if your roommate or neighbors have something for you to borrow. you could wear a nice pair of black pants and a nice top. if you don't have a good pair of black pants, i highly suggest buying a pair. even in college, you will get lots of use out of them.

if you are truly worried about going alone, maybe someone you know is going too. talk to your friends. you may be surprised that others had already planned to go. if not, don't feel badly about going alone. there will be plenty of people to talk to. the women of the chapter are interested in getting to know each prospective member. even if you go with a friend, they will want to talk to you...not have your friend talk for you.

I would strongly urge you to not pursue membership into any organization at this time. If you are committed to an organization you will wait and pursue membership when it is made available to you. Use this time to save up for some business attire (stick to neutral colors), learn more about the organizations (via members in your area, NOT those on the internet) you are interested in, get and maintain a 4.0 GPA, become an active member of at least 2 other campus organizations, get some community service experience. I could go on but you are in college so use those brain cells.

Are these Social Greeks or something else?

Since when did Business attire come into vouge with college students?

From what I've gathered reading GC and such, at the interest meetings for NPHC groups, women are often required to wear business attire (I'm guessing this is a suit). It shows that you are not there just to "party" - you are there to take care of the business of the sorority - and that you can present yourself in a professional as well as ladylike manner.

NPHC ladies, if I've spoken out of turn, please correct me.

I am sure if she is a worthy Candidate, if she is not wearing pin stripes and double breasted out fits, she would not be turned down. If she dressed very nicely and was neat and clean with a good record, she would be excepted.

The clothes do not make the person, the person makes the person. Hell, I had one sport coat and one pair of slacks and dress shoes when I was in College, and I was in Business Dept.
But so, isnt the education that they are there for the most important thing.

I attend an undergraduate school. The sororities I am referring to belong to the NPHC's Divine 9.

I agree with this post. The good thing about NPHC sororities is that YOU CAN join an alumnae chapter. It's not necessarily easier or guaranteed, but it seems as though you need more time to make an educated decision.

It doesn't matter. We BOTH (Grad and Undergrad) want the perspective members to present themselves (as we will present ourselves) in a professional manner.

How old are you? (how long do you have left in college) You mentioned wanting to be an undergrad so that would play into the fact of how much time you have to wait for ABC to go back to campus.

Ditto on TheEpitome1920, don't go to other intrest meetings if you are not interested.

Back to what TheEpitome1920 said about saving up for a "business attire" outfit, I think it's a good idea. You can view it as a really good investment, because when you go to career fairs for internships/co-ops while you're an undergrad or for your full-time career when you're nearing graduation, you are going to need a business suit. It's definitely something that is better to have ahead of time than to be scrambling around trying to find one right before a career fair or a company's information session or an interview with a potential employer. And if you go ahead of time, you can check out several stores and probably get a better deal.

Thanks for everyone who has answered.

I just have one thing, the other day I over heard some sophomore females talking about pursuing membership (into the sorority I am very interested in) at another local school. Is that possible?

Here's the info. : The sorority I long to be apart of, USED to be on my schools campus, but is not longer here (due to unexplained reasons)
