Kappa Delta for Governor

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...vsorority.html

I thought you might like to see this article in a Seattle paper about a Kappa Delta who is running for governor this year (and is the Democratic forerunner).

Warning: it's not all rosy for KD and brings up a policy that has long changed.

I just skimmed the article, but I also know what Chris has done as Attorney General and she has a pretty good reputation with or without this article. So I read it already having a positive opinion of her.

Besides, her Democratic opponent is advocating a state income tax and is VERY liberal so she has him beat. And it's been a LONG time since we've had a Republican governor.

I thought she is the democrat who's running?

I really don't like how they used Robbins in this article! Can she just disappear sometime? It's like she's the expert on being greek or something...

It's unbelieveable how this issue was brought up. All NPC sororities had similar policies back in the late 1960s. And I can't believe the attention it's getting - weird seeing the KD crest on the local news!

Anyway, unfortunately, I moved here too late to qualify to vote in the Sept elections..

Alexandra Robbins, author of "Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities," says she knows first-hand how hostile sororities are to criticism, especially from within.

She DOES? Because she makes a point of saying in the book that she was never in one.

And I've never seen racism from national KD. Our president was black, for crying out loud... though we did go through one year's calendar and count how many black girls there were. We also had a Buddhist and a Wiccan that I know of offhand. And besides, weren't a lot of things particular in the 60s, not just sororities?

She is "a" democrat who's running. I meant it as "even with this story, a Republican will have a tough time beating her"......

The NAACP has now gotten involved in the controversy. I didn't see it, but they had a press conference yesterday on the issue.

It did make tonight's news though.

One thing I failed to mention. Her Dem oppponent is African American.

IMO, she was in a catch 22...
had she dropped, it woulda been like "we don't want her kind anyway"
But she stayed in and worked to help change the policy. It took chutzpah to do that! And getting up at Convention to let her feelings know to a lot of "old school" ladies, I am sure made her unpopular.

She chose to change things from within and I admire her for that!

I am a Washington resident (even though I am living in Canada at this point and time). NAACP controversy or not, this Black woman says: "Christine has my vote!"

I had to send an email to the commentator last night about the situation. I pointed out that not only was it (unfortunately) a common statement at that time in our history, it was a common feeling in America (ok, my wording was much better than this is sounding).

I also pointed out that there were predominately African American fraternities and sororities that had similar opinions and that her opponent was most likely a member of one of those.

I closed by pointing out that some of his co-workers are also members of his "whites only" sororities (and one isn't white).

There are more articles today if anyone would like to see them. I'm choosing not to post them anymore.

It's crazy how things come up in elections... poor lady though. The past was bleak in the US, not just Kappa Delta...
