NYC might sale nameing rights to train station, bus stations, and other landmarks

Crazy. Can you imagine now entering McDonald's station....?

NEW YORK - Facing what it says could be budget gaps of more than $1 billion in the coming years, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is exploring the sale of naming rights to its subway stations, bus lines, bridges and tunnels.

Officials quietly issued a formal request for proposals last month from marketing firms that they would charge with landing sponsorship deals that could include anything from renaming historic stations to attaching corporate monikers to building projects such as the long-awaited Second Avenue subway.

Also last month, MTA proposed a sweeping list of fare and toll increases and cutbacks

i think it's a good idea as long as it's subtle, like they're saying.

they have increased the subway prices a lot in the last few years an the service hasn't gotten any better. what is going to happen is it's going to be more economical for people to drive into the city from long island, jersey and upstate than to take the train. this will cause even more congestion (is that even possible?? ever try using the belt parkway or LIE during rush hour...what a nightmare). they need to do something about these prices...

Sponsorships are one good way to get these companies that have moved their income overseas to avoid taxes to start paying a little back.

Strange that this would happen under Bloomberg's watch. I figured the guy would be able to make ends meet considering his business background.

Even if they don't raise the tolls for the B&T people, which they probably will, the traffic is so bad that rail is the best way to get into the City.

If you drive into Manhattan, parking is almost impossible to find. If you park in a garage, you will pay at least five times the price of the subway or bus. Public transportation is also the fastest way to travel around New York City.

I guess the B&T crowd must like clogging up the roads and breathe their own noxious exhaust fumes!

(B&T: that's New Yorkese for the 'bridge and tunnel', meaning anyone who doesn't live in Manhattan Island proper and must commute from the other four boroughs, Noo Joisey, Lawn Guisland and other far flung parts using the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan.)
