U.S. hostage Johnson apparently beheaded

Web site posts photos believed to be body of man held in Saudi Arabia

(CNN) -- Three chilling photographs on an Islamist Web site appear to show the beheaded body of American hostage Paul Johnson, who was kidnapped a week ago by Islamic militants connected with al Qaeda.

Abdel Aziz Al-Muqrin, the self-proclaimed military leader of al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia, claimed responsibility for Johnson's kidnapping and the death of another American on the same day on behalf of a group called the Al Falluja Squadron.

On Tuesday, he threatened to kill Johnson in 72 hours unless the Saudi government released al Qaeda prisoners and all Westerners left the Arabian Peninsula.

"We gave you the deadline but you did not respect it," a statement on the Web site said. "This is what we promised to do."

However, these terrorists are definitely animals, and should be treated as such. The rest of the middle east may not like Americans. That's no reason to kill them though -- in fact, many in Iraq have a favorable view of Americans according to some polls. That may go up and down after we get out of there -- that all depends on if this regime holds up.

News reports that the leader of alQaida in Saudi Arabia was found and killed today, only 4.5 hours after Johnson's murder.

IMHO, a day late, dollar short, and one American life also shorted.

S.A. needs to get things cleaned up internally, and quickly - this could lead to all kinds of problems.

Prediction: look for mass exodus of Americans from S.A., also, large scale reprisals from alQaida, and the inevitable increase in gas prices this crisis will create.

The Saudi Al Queda leader was apparently killed during a fire-fight with Suadi security forces when him and his cohorts were trying to dispose of Johnson's body... a bit of poetic justice...

Saudi Arabia is being put in a tight spot... as Al Queda is using classic guerilla tactics... were it is much easier to provoke a negative response from the government or controlling power by these acts of terrorism. If Saudi Arabia comes down too hard, by punishing innocents along with the guilty, then it provokes a popular movement against itself. Whereas if it doesn't take significant actions against the terrorists/guerillas then it appears weak and invites more terrorists/guerilla actions.

So now it comes down to a waiting game of which side makes the first signifcant error... either the Saudi security over-react or the terrorists kidnap or kill the wrong person.

The fact that there even was an informant tells me that there are decent Saudis out there. I truly appreciate the gesture. The animal killers were killed as they should have been. It is only regrettable that they weren't exposed to a little Saudi prison hospitality (tortured for information) before they were eliminated.

A sad situation regarding Mr. Johnson, but at least in this case there was apparantely some immediate retribution.

In some ways, though, it might have been as good for the terrorists to be captured, tried and executed.

Do they still execute by public beheading in Saudi Arabia? Or is that just in Tom Clancy novels?

Yes they still do.... for murder, drug related offenses, rape, or armed robbery. They also practice amputation for other crimes, and flogging for others. All of this is done according their interpretation of Shari'a.
